Demolition of the popular beach bar 54° Nord: A new beginning in 250 meters!

The old beach bar 54° Nord on Ordinger Strand in St. Peter-Ording will be demolished. This demolition work, which began on May 15, 2025, is a step that is emotional for many but considered necessary. Tourism director Katharina Schirmbeck explained that the dismantling is being carried out both for reasons of coastal protection and for the future viability of the region. The dismantling was ordered by the State Office for Coastal Protection, National Park and Marine Protection Schleswig-Holstein (LKN) and the Wadden Sea National Park.

The pile structure is permanently submerged in water during high tides, which has led to a loss of stability. Safety reasons are therefore also an important factor for demolition. The work is running about a month and a half later than originally planned. The dismantling is expected to take at least two months and can only be carried out at low tide because the beach bar is too far in the water.

New location and auction of piles

After the demolition of the beach's own bar, a new beach bar 54° North is planned to be built 250 meters inland at a new location. This new bar will feature a viewing platform and dining options to provide visitors with a great experience.

Another interesting aspect of the dismantling is the auction of 54 piles that will be secured and temporarily stored by the jetty and the wooden structure. The auction will take place on August 1, 2025 at 1 p.m. Pieces in lengths of one to five meters as well as smaller slices are offered.

Pile dwellings as landmarks

Pile dwellings have been an integral part of the landscape in St. Peter-Ording for over 100 years and are considered the town's landmark. Such buildings can be found on all sections of the beach, which shape the typical character of St. Peter-Ording. The opening of the new beach bar “54° Nord” is planned for this season, although the exact dates have not yet been set.

The demolition of the old beach bar represents a turning point for residents and tourists. While many are affected by the changes, there is also hope for a more modern and safe catering facility in the future. Dismantling is a complex process that requires close cooperation between the responsible authorities.
