Protecting the seas: Nice discusses the future of coral reefs!

The UN Ocean Conference 2025 in Nice on June 12, 2025 brought the urgent need for ocean protection into focus. Under the motto “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to protect and sustainably use the oceans”, the importance of international cooperation to preserve marine ecosystems was emphasized. The MSC Foundation presented groundbreaking initiatives in maritime education and tourism to strengthen coral protection. This reports ships-and-cruises.de.

A central concern of the conference was the promotion of cross-sector partnerships. These initiatives aim to create sustainable value for reefs and coastal communities. During two interactive sessions at the ICRI #ForCoral Pavilion, eight high-level speakers appeared to discuss the challenges and opportunities in marine conservation.

Focus on coral reefs and education

A highlight of the conference was the Super Coral Reefs Program, which takes place on Ocean Cay, Bahamas. Professor David Smith pointed out that bold initiatives are needed to protect coral reef habitats. Dr. Raveenia Roberts-Hanna emphasized the importance of providing practical training opportunities for students to develop future leaders in the field of marine conservation.

Marevivo's educational programs reach over 1,000 students in multiple countries each year, underscoring the role of education in sustainable marine conservation. Daniela Picco from the MSC Foundation explained the connection between restoration, science and education. The desire for joint efforts was also supported by Tom Dallison, who highlighted the urgency of protecting coral reefs.

Global challenges in the Coral Triangle

The challenges facing marine ecosystems are obvious. The Coral Triangle, as the global epicenter of marine biodiversity, is at great risk from overfishing, destruction of coastal habitats, waste discharge and climate change. Loud giz.de Measures are urgently needed to increase the resilience of ecosystems.

The Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF), initiated by the six countries of the Coral Triangle, takes a comprehensive approach to protecting local biodiversity. Important marine areas such as the Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape and the Bismarck-Solomon Seascape are the focus of these efforts.

To effectively protect habitats, governments strive to work closely together to disseminate successful solutions and develop common strategies to conserve biodiversity and ecosystem services.

The UN Ocean Conference 2025 shows how important it is to promote innovative approaches and international cooperation. Protecting our oceans remains a global responsibility that must be actively shaped.
