Summer 2025: Austrians travel to the sea despite inflation!

Despite the ongoing inflation, Austrians have a great desire to travel in the summer of 2025. According to a survey by the ÖAMTC, almost every second Austrian is planning to spend their summer vacation abroad. A full 96% of those surveyed said they were planning a holiday trip, with around 70% planning to travel abroad and 51% planning to spend their holiday domestically. Only 4% of those surveyed are foregoing a summer trip or are undecided. This survey was conducted in April among 1,000 people aged 18 to 69 and is therefore representative of the population.

An interesting detail is that 40% of travelers have already booked their summer vacation. Despite inflationary trends, 60% of respondents need to save on summer vacations, with 20% needing to do so heavily. The savings potential is primarily sought in accommodation, local expenses and the number and duration of trips. The average holiday budget for 2025 is 1,233 euros per person, which represents an increase of 171 euros compared to the previous year.

Popular holiday destinations and travel types

The most popular travel destinations for Austrians in the summer of 2025 are clearly defined. Italy comes first, followed by Croatia and Greece. Germany and Spain also attract travelers. What is particularly noteworthy is that 58% of respondents want to travel to the sea, while 25% want to spend their vacation at the lake or in the mountains. City trips are also of interest to 31% of those surveyed.

Families and people under 30 in particular prefer a holiday by the sea, although there are many attractive offers in the popular federal states for domestic holidays such as Carinthia, Styria and Lower Austria. 75% of families often use their own car when traveling, while the majority of solo travelers prefer taking the bus or train. Overall, 71% of travelers plan to travel in their own car; 37% only use the car, 21% combine it with the plane and 13% with the train.

Savings and reasons for vacation

The reasons for vacationing remain unchanged: relaxation, enjoying the sun, recharging your batteries and spending time with family and friends are the main motivations of travelers. Less than 10% of those surveyed think about digital detox, further training or getting to know other cultures. In addition, 22% of travelers value culinary experiences, while 13% focus on sporting activities.

The survey shows that the majority of savers have found ways to reduce travel costs. Many travelers consider costs when it comes to food and activities and choose cheaper accommodations. This trend could become the norm given the rising cost of living and shows the adaptability of travelers in a challenging economic environment.

The current data and insights about Austrians' desire to travel and the ongoing enthusiasm for summer vacations make it clear that despite financial cuts, the desire for relaxation and time out remains strong. In times of rising prices, the desire to travel remains unbroken and suitable ways are found to still make optimal use of the travel budget.
