Looking for summer freshness? Coolcation in the north for relaxing days!

The summer holidays are just around the corner and not everyone prefers a holiday in high temperatures of over 30 degrees, which can pose health risks. Instead, a new trend is coming into focus: “coolcation”, which focuses on cooler travel destinations in the north and in the mountains. This type of travel not only offers pleasant temperatures, but also numerous opportunities for activities in nature. That's how it reports Echo24 about a variety of options that can make the summer time enjoyable.

Especially in the far north, travelers find mild temperatures, long days and impressive nature. Countries like Norway, Sweden and Iceland are ideal for a relaxing summer vacation. Travel to Iceland is very popular thanks to its spectacular volcanic landscapes and waterfalls, with temperatures often staying below 20 degrees. Sweden is also a popular destination, especially for campers who prefer natural and sustainable accommodation. The opportunity to camp there and visit the breathtaking national parks for free captivates many.

Popular travel destinations in the north

The North and Baltic Sea coasts of Germany and neighboring countries also seem to be an appealing option. With a moderate climate and the cooling effect of the sea, East Frisian islands such as Norderney and Borkum are particularly recommended. There, visitors can enjoy activities such as swimming, mudflat hikes and bicycle tours in moderate temperatures that rarely rise above 20 degrees.

For those seeking adventure in mild weather, the mountains in South Tyrol are an excellent choice. There can be temperature differences of up to 10 degrees, making the pleasant climatic conditions in the mountains ideal for outdoor activities. The Swiss Alps, especially the Via Alpina, also attract hiking enthusiasts with wonderful views and a challenging route over 14 Alpine passes.

Activities and travel options

But there are exciting opportunities not only in Sweden and Germany. In Finland, where holiday homes on Lake Saimaa are available for rent between August and September, passionate nature lovers will find a quiet oasis. You can arrive either via direct flights to Helsinki or by ferry from Travemünde. In Norway, the capital Oslo and the picturesque valleys of Valdres are waiting to be explored.

An interesting alternative for long-distance travelers is Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, which is considered a pleasant summer alternative. For those who prefer Mediterranean countries, experts recommend later summer months or autumn to visit destinations such as Greece and the Turkish Aegean with pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists.

The Booking.com survey also shows that in 2024, over 50% of respondents will have had their travel plans influenced by climate change. More than 56% choose cooler vacation spots, further reinforcing the coolcation trend. With all of these options, travelers have many options to escape the summer heat and have an unforgettable, refreshing vacation. This trend is expected to continue in the future and is reshaping many people's travel plans.
