Steinmeier on a trip to Japan: Strengthen partnership with key partner!
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will begin a multi-day visit to Japan on June 17, 2025. This trip, which lasts until June 20, aims to reaffirm the political and economic partnership with Japan. Japan is highlighted as a key partner in geopolitically uncertain times. Steinmeier will be accompanied by Federal Minister for Research, Technology and Space, Dorothee Bär (CSU), as well as a high-ranking business delegation.
The trip starts in Tokyo, where there are planned meetings with Emperor Naruhito and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. A special item on the program is a visit to the Institute of Science Tokyo to emphasize German-Japanese cooperation in future and key technologies. Steinmeier will also hold talks with the Japanese writer Haruki Murakami.
Stations of the journey
After the stay in Tokyo, further stops in Osaka and Kobe are on the program. Osaka will host EXPO 2025, an event that is becoming increasingly important and is intended to underline the innovative strength of both countries.
Steinmeier's departure will take place on the afternoon of June 17, 2025 from Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport. The return to Berlin is planned for June 20th. In advance, the Federal President's Office asked the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA) for expressions of interest in the business delegation in order to ensure a balanced mix of larger companies and medium-sized businesses.
Conditions of participation for the business delegation
Interested company representatives, including board members, managing directors and owners, had until May 19, 2025 to apply using a form. Particular attention is paid to encouraging applications from women. A mandatory requirement for participation is the existence of specific business or project interests in Japan. The decision on the composition of the delegation is made by the Federal President's Office and only affects the participants who fly on the Federal President's plane.
The costs for travel and accommodation must be borne by the delegation members themselves. In addition, a separate anti-corruption declaration must be sent to the BDI. Before the trip, all participants will receive further information about the program and flights. This important trip underlines the growing interest in increased cooperation between Germany and Japan in various areas.
