Thuringia: Overnight stays are falling slightly - trend sign or alarm?

In the first half of 2023, Thuringia recorded a total of 4.6 million overnight stays, which corresponds to a slight decrease of 1.3 percent compared to the previous year. The number of guests was also 1.1 percent lower at 1.8 million. Despite these slight losses, the State Office for Statistics emphasizes that these should not be overestimated, as the industry is overall in positive territory compared to the first half of 2023. The general development in the German accommodation industry is stagnating, and Thuringia is no exception. While the cities of Erfurt and Eichsfeld recorded positive numbers of overnight stays, all other travel areas in Thuringia showed declines. Particular losses were recorded in the Wartburg-Hainich region and in Saaleland.

Statistical surveys and adjustments

The current overnight stay figures were published by the Thuringian State Office for Statistics and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). These figures are initially provisional as not all data were available in time. The Thuringian State Office for Statistics also publishes monthly statistics on arrivals, overnight stays and length of stay in Thuringia. From 2025, a comparison with the 2019 figures for the Thuringian travel areas will no longer be possible, as changes were made to the classification of the travel areas on January 1st, 2023.
