Tourism boom in South Tyrol: overnight stays at a record high!
The tourism sector in South Tyrol has experienced unprecedented development in recent decades. According to that HNA In 2024, the number of arrivals exceeded 8.7 million, an increase of over 2,500 percent compared to 330,289 arrivals in 1950. This is a clear indicator of the growing popularity of the region, which is particularly in demand among Italian tourists. Overnight stays also increased dramatically, from 1.82 million in 1950 to more than 37 million in 2024, an increase of 1930 percent.
What is particularly noteworthy is that since 2003, arrivals have increased faster than overnight stays. This indicates that holidaymakers are increasingly booking shorter stays in South Tyrol. While Merano was still the most popular holiday region in 1950 - with almost 350,000 overnight stays and a market share of 19 percent - the landscape has now changed. In 1990, Meran still had the most overnight stays, but its market share had fallen to 4.8 percent.
Trend towards shorter stays
The trend towards shorter stays observed since 2003 has meant that some communities have increased in popularity in recent years. Castelrotto has taken the top spot in terms of overnight stays since 2002 and recorded a record of 1,780,424 overnight stays in 2024. This makes Castelrotto the municipality with the highest number of overnight stays in South Tyrol.
Selva di Val Gardena, which took the lead in overnight stays in the 1990s, has also benefited. In contrast, Neumarkt experienced a significant decline in overnight stays between 1990 and 2024, falling from 48,876 to 23,345 overnight stays - a decrease of 52.2 percent.
Economic importance of tourism
State Tourism Councilor Luis Walcher highlights the economic benefits of tourism for South Tyrol. At a time when tourism is booming, he emphasizes the need for responsible development. Walcher calls for a balance between the needs of the population and the expectations of guests. The challenges posed by the influx of holidaymakers are being met with strategic planning in order to preserve the quality of the living space in this popular region.
Overall, the development of tourism in South Tyrol shows continued growth and the strong attraction of the region. Over the last few decades, interest in this Alpine destination has continuously increased, while at the same time the demand for sustainable tourism is growing.
