Vacation and football drama: Mallorca fans experience a turbulent game!

Holidays in Mallorca not only offer relaxation, but also passion for football. From May 16th to 20th, 2025, three German football fans, each with loyalties to Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04 and Heidenheim, accompanied this sporting aspect of their trip. This weekend not only saw the last Bundesliga matchday, but also a hotly anticipated home game for RCD Mallorca in La Liga. Their stay spontaneously took them to the “Estadi Mallorca Son Moix”, where they bought tickets for around 60 euros per person.

The game that Mallorca played against Getafe was of great importance for both teams. Mallorca, currently in 10th place, were battling to stay just one point off the coveted European spots, while Getafe were fighting relegation. The stadium, which has space for around 23,000 spectators, was well filled for this game. Before kick-off, the fans experienced a spectacular supporting program with people in costumes and music.

The game and the reactions of the fans

However, the game that day did not go as hoped for the RCD Mallorca supporters. The team lost 1-2 against Getafe. This defeat caused discontent among the fans, who loudly expressed their dissatisfaction. The Mallorca Ultras in particular were sometimes heavily criticized and insulted not only their own team, but also other fans. Even Cyle Larin, who scored a goal in stoppage time, was booed.

The disappointed spectators sharply criticized the club, especially the sporting development and the supposed distance between the club and its supporters. Andy Kohlberg, the American club owner, is in the firing line of critics because his decisions are not well received by fans. Journalist Tomeu Maura even predicts a “big bang” at RCD Mallorca, while players like Pablo Maffeo and Samu Costa are causing further unrest with speculation about possible moves.

A turbulent club history

RCD Mallorca, the oldest professional football club in the Balearic Islands, was founded in 1916 and has an eventful history. The club enjoyed its first glory days in the late 1990s and early 2000s, finishing third in La Liga in 1999 and winning the prestigious Copa del Rey in 2003. However, after financial difficulties, the club slipped into the Segunda División in 2013 and even reached the third division in 2017.

The club's return to La Liga came in 2019 under coach Vicente Moreno with successive promotions. Avoiding relegations and returning to the top Spanish league in 2021 underline the recovery that the club has been striving for since then. Mallorca is targeting a place in European competitions by 2025, which will be supported by investments in young talent and smart transfers. Mallorca remain a team known for their defensive discipline and organization, using the passionate atmosphere at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix to inspire their own supporters.

Overall, the German fans' stay shows both the challenges and the potential of RCD Mallorca. Despite the defeat against Getafe, there remains hope for positive sporting development and perhaps early European dreams for the historic club from Mallorca.
