Holiday nightmare in Mallorca: suitcase thief and failed Uber ride!
Leony Busch and Michele Stutzmann from Dinslaken (NRW) started their first vacation together on Mallorca on May 10th. For Leony it was the first trip to the popular island, while Michele was last there in 2009. After arriving, they took an Uber taxi to their hotel, but the joy of their vacation was quickly dampened.
The Uber driver dropped the couple off at the hotel and then drove off with their suitcases while they were getting out. Despite desperate attempts to run after the car and call the driver, there was no help. They waited outside the hotel for half an hour hoping that the driver would return, but that didn't happen.
The couple's desperation
The hijacked suitcases contained important personal possessions such as clothing, cosmetics, jewelry and medication. Leony, who had her handbag with valuables and documents, tried in vain to contact the Uber company. The police report also gave little hope of recovering the suitcases, as the license plate number was unknown.
In her distress, Leony turned to the public on Facebook and posted a picture of the driver. Hours passed with no news while Leony had to wash clothes by hand and Michele tried to humor the situation. Shortly before canceling her vacation, Leony was emotionally stressed and frustrated. Michele, on the other hand, remained optimistic and saw the situation as a possible oversight.
An unexpected happy ending
The next morning, Leony received a call from another Uber driver via Facebook offering to help. It was with great relief that he found the suitcases and had already contacted the hotel. Finally the suitcases could be picked up at reception and Leony confirmed that nothing was missing. Your vacation on Mallorca could finally begin.
But it wasn't just Leony and Michele who had to deal with problems at the airport. On November 13, a 46-year-old woman was arrested at Mallorca Airport for allegedly stealing two suitcases. She had taken another couple's luggage and fled. However, the police were able to intercept the thief at the bus stop.
When arrested, the woman said the suitcases were hers, but the luggage tags proved otherwise. The officers handed the suitcases over to the rightful owners, who immediately recognized them. In addition to the suitcases, the police also found four sticks of tobacco and four boxes of perfume, the total value of which was over 6,000 euros. It is believed that the woman was a professional thief who targeted areas accessible to passengers.
The incidents show that both the joy of a vacation and the dangers of the airport can go hand in hand, and remind travelers to always be careful with their luggage.
