Hidden costs when traveling to the supermarket: Holidays can be so dangerous!

Being on the safe side when on holiday – that’s what many consumers want. Anyone who books package holidays assumes that they are choosing an “all-round carefree” way of traveling. But hidden costs and unpleasant surprises can spoil your travel pleasure. The consumer advice center has published information about these hidden costs, which have been particularly relevant in recent months. In fact, sales of brick-and-mortar travel agencies and online travel portals are increasing by 12% compared to the previous year and show the growing interest in package holidays.

Offers from discounters such as Lidl and Aldi as well as large supermarkets such as Rewe and Edeka, which now offer package holidays and cruises, also receive particular attention. These providers try to attract travelers with attractive prices, especially during off-peak holiday periods. However, holidaymakers should be aware that the basic price often does not include all services and additional fees may apply.

Hidden costs: A risk when booking

A central point is the often varying baggage regulations. Only about half of travel providers cover the cost of standard-sized carry-on luggage, while additional fees for oversized luggage can range from 50 to 100 euros. The risks associated with flight times should also not be underestimated. Changes to departure times, departure locations or cabins may incur additional costs, making it difficult to plan a stress-free vacation.

It should be particularly emphasized that holidaymakers should check the organizers carefully. If there are problems with the trip, such as shortages in accommodation or difficulty communicating with an agent, inconveniences can quickly arise. Complaints about construction sites, out-of-service pools or inadequate food are common here. It is therefore advisable to clarify the travel provider and their contact person in advance.

The protection of consumers

With the increasing popularity of package holidays, the need for robust consumer protection has also increased. The EU Package Travel Directive offers proven protection for consumers by ensuring a certain level of security before, during and after a trip, especially abroad. However, challenges such as the corona pandemic and the bankruptcy of Thomas Cook have highlighted weaknesses in this system.

The Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv) is therefore committed to strong consumer protection regulations to ensure that trips continue to meet the high expectations of travelers in the future. Vacation time is used intensively by Germans, which is why interest in transparent and fair travel conditions is of utmost importance.

Overall, booking a package holiday remains a popular form of holiday planning in Germany, but travelers should be careful and check the offers carefully to avoid unpleasant surprises. Price comparisons with other providers are advisable in order to secure the best conditions and to be able to enjoy the trip carefree.
