Water damage and a visit home: Santorini” in Westerland remains closed!

The popular restaurant “Santorini” in Westerland, on Sylt, remains closed for the time being. Operator Dimitri Doshi announced that water damage was the reason for the closure. This has led to rumors of the restaurant's permanent closure. However, Doshi assured that the closure is temporary to repair the damage. In addition, his absence from home for an extended period of time is cited as part of the reasons for the closure.
The restaurant is scheduled to reopen in the summer, with a target date of June 1st.

However, the situation of “Santorini” is not the only one that affects the gastronomic landscape on Sylt. In 2022, at least eleven restaurants had to close, including traditional restaurants. The reasons for this wave of closures are varied: expiring leases and the advanced age of the operators play a decisive role. The “Dem kleine Restaurant” closed its doors after 43 years because the operator, Franz Ganser, was old and there was no successor in sight.

Reasons for closures on Sylt

The “Achter Dünem”, a prestigious three-star hotel in Westerland, will also be closed for reasons of age. The new owners will take over the hotel from 2023. Olaf Jaschinski also had to close “Zur Eiche” in Tinnum after the property was sold and the building was demolished. Pius Regli was also forced to close the “Pius Weinbar” in Keitum due to an expiring rental agreement. Further closures also result from expiring leases.

Another example is “Sünhair by Klaus” in Keitum, which closed in mid-October but is scheduled to reopen in 2023 under a new tenant. On the other hand, Bastian Falkenroth is struggling with his restaurant “Goldgelb”, which he had to close for economic reasons, a lack of staff and water damage, similar to “Santorini”. In addition, Jürgen Gosch limited the operation of his restaurant “Jünne” to groups of 80 to 100 people, which illustrates the effects of the staff shortage on the catering industry.

While the closures pose serious challenges, Raphael Ipsen, the second chairman of the Dehoga hotel and restaurant association on Sylt, does not see restaurants actually dying out. In fact, many new establishments opened, so there is still hope for a change in the gastronomic scene.
