World Bicycle Day: Cycling action and faces of the Ruhr area!

On June 3, 2025, a special photo campaign took place in the Ruhr area on the occasion of World Bicycle Day. Organized by Ruhr Tourismus GmbH, the event focused on the use and importance of cycling in the region. The campaign included some of the best-known cycle paths, such as the RuhrtalRadweg, the Römer-Lippe-Route, the Emscher-Weg and the radrevier.ruhr platform.

Cyclists from the region as well as guests from Berlin, Mannheim, the Allgäu, the Netherlands and Belgium, among others, actively took part in the photo campaign. The scenes that were captured show people traveling on ferries, taking a break in the countryside and exploring the beauty of the Ruhr area.

Diversity of cycle paths in the Ruhr area

The various cycle paths offer an impressive picture of the varied landscape of the Ruhr area. The RuhrtalRadweg stretches over 240 kilometers from Winterberg to Duisburg and leads along picturesque stages with numerous stops to discover cities such as Dortmund and Essen. The Römer-Lippe route stretches over an impressive 400 kilometers from Detmold to Xanten and includes the use of the Lippe ferries.

The Emscher-Weg is also a popular stopover for cyclists, winding through the Emscherland between Castrop-Rauxel and Recklinghausen. At radrevier.ruhr the focus is on the combination of industrial culture and nature experiences, especially in the Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen.

Attractions and infrastructure

The Ruhr area, known for its large cities and its industrial culture, not only offers cycle paths, but also scenic landscapes. The region extends from the Rhenish Slate Mountains to the Lower Rhine Plain, with well-asphalted cycle paths almost everywhere. These include the Hohe Mark Nature Park, the circular tour around Xanten and the Kirchheller Heide near Bottrop with its 100 km cycle network.

The Erzbahntrasse, which connects Bochum and Gelsenkirchen along a 100-year-old railway line, is also particularly popular, as is the cycle path around Lake Baldeney with its diverse sights. The Ennepetalsperre in Radevormwald is also an important drinking water reservoir, which also offers an attractive cycle path with panoramic views.

The photo campaign for World Bicycle Day impressively shows the diversity of cycling in the Ruhr area. The portraits taken can be viewed on the social media channels of the participating cycle paths and illustrate the fascination and community that cycling creates. Cyclists of all ages and backgrounds come together to explore the beauty of this region while making a statement about the importance of environmentally friendly mobility.
