Important ADAC weighing action: Start safely to the camping adventure!

Hermann-Fulle-Straße 10, 30880 Laatzen, Deutschland - The camping season has started and the anticipation for the first trips to the motorhome is noticeable. Travel destinations at home and abroad are available, but there are important aspects that owners of motorhomes should consider. The permissible weight limit, which plays a crucial role in loading the vehicle, is often unknown. Overcharge horses high security risks and can significantly influence driving dynamics. A fully loaded motorhome has a different behavior than in empty condition, which can be dangerous, especially in serpentine trips and evasive maneuvers. The ADAC warns that overcharges can not only lead to uncontrollable vehicles, but also be punished abroad with high fines and the disposal of luggage.

To help campers in the weight check, the ADAC organizes a weighing campaign. This will take place on Sunday, May 25, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the ADAC driving safety center in Laatzen. On this occasion, vehicle owners can have the weight and charging of their motorhome determined. In addition, ADAC experts are available that provide valuable tips on luggage distribution and driving behavior, as well as explain the camping regulations in different countries. Registration for the weighing action is not necessary, so that every participant is welcome.

dangers of overcharge

The overload of a motorhome can bring serious consequences. ADAC experts emphasize that a heavier vehicle is more difficult to maneuver and the risk of accidents increases. The vehicle performance can also be impaired - drivers can experience difficulties with speeds and gradients, while wearing the tires increases significantly. In the event of overload, tire places can occur, which is not only dangerous for safety, but also associated with higher fuel costs.

The overload can also cause damage to the vehicle structure, such as cracks and deformations. This often leads to serious security impairments. In addition, legal violations can lead to a fine or even to decommissioning the vehicle. The ADAC points out that different countries determine different fines for overcharge, which are of great importance for travelers.

  • Denmark: 10 euros per percentage point exceeding for drivers, 20 euros for vehicle owners.
  • France: fines between 135 and 750 euros, onward journey prohibited from more than 5% exceeding.
  • Italy: tolerance of 5%, fines vary, up to 1700 euros possible.
  • Austria: 85 euros to 100 kg overload, 170 euros from 6% overload, display from 15%.
  • Switzerland: 85 euros with less than 100 kg overload, 170 euros at more than 100 kg.

In order to avoid inconvenience during the trip, the ADAC recommends weighing motorhomes from traveling and checking the total weight. The Camper Mautbox XXL, available for 99 euros per year, enables a comfortable passage to toll stations in 11 countries.
