Quick Answer: How to get to Nusa Penida from Bali on a day tour

If you don't have the luxury of spending a few days on the island, you can also book an epic day tour from Bali. As you would expect, there are dozens of tour operators offering excursions, but be warned that not all are the same!

I highly recommend booking a day trip to Nusa Penida with a local company. My favorite is Four Elements, which offers several great excursion options from Bali.

Getting to Nusa Penida from Bali by ferry (Canggu, Kuta, Seminyak)

For those who want to get to Nusa Penida from Bali, you should know that the fast ferries to the islands depart from two locations.

• Die Hafenstadt Sanur – liegt an der Südostküste von Bali, etwa 30 Minuten von Kuta oder 1 Stunde von Canggu entfernt.
• Der neue Hafen am Pemelisan Harbour – liegt ebenfalls an der Südostküste von Bali.

My recommendation for those who want to get to Nusa Penida from Canggu, Seminyak or Kuta is to book the fast ferry ticket on Klook that departs from Sanur as this includes a van/shuttle transfer to the port. This means you don't have to worry about paying for a Grab or taxi to the ferry terminal, which would end up making the independent option much more expensive.

Here is the fast ferry deal to Nusa Penida from Sanur that you can book online in advance. And I've also included the ferry timetable below. This deal with Klook is not for a single boat, but allows you to choose one of the speedboat ferries to the island at the cheapest price.

If you go to Sanur alone you will have to try to negotiate this price down even for a fast boat, which is the mistake I made on my first visit.

Speedboat schedule

The speedboats from Sanur Beach Port to Nusa Penida operate 7 days a week according to the following schedule.

Note that the boats will not operate if the weather is too rough. This is a little hard to predict, but if you book in advance with Klook you will either get your money back straight away or you can request a postponed departure.

This is one of the reasons why I suggest Klook over booking on the street.

What about Ubud?

Getting from Ubud to Nusa Penida is a little more difficult as the distance is much greater. There are currently no fast ferry tickets available to book that include a transfer to Sanur or Pemelisan Port.

However, you can arrange transportation in Ubud to get to both ports. The journey takes about an hour but could definitely be longer depending on traffic. For transportation options from Ubud to Sanur Port, I recommend checking 12Go which will give you current times and prices for buses and taxis.

What it's like to take the Nusa Penida boat from Sanur

I always took the fast ferry from Bali to Nusa Penida via the port of Sanur. When I first arrived it was certainly a bit chaotic. Since I hadn't booked a ticket in advance, I was immediately surrounded by eager salespeople offering me pretty ridiculous prices.

I expected that in Bali, but negotiating here turned out to be a real pain.

However, I got lucky the first time and chose what I thought was the best boat, Sanjaya. This boat is safe, the staff is very friendly and you are even offered a coffee when you arrive. I have read good reviews about most speedboats, but this is the one I have always taken and I definitely recommend it.

Once you're away, expect a roughly 45-minute drive from Sanur to Nusa Penida. The old “slow boats” no longer offer trips for tourists as they are quite dangerous and have even capsized in the past. Depending on the weather, you can expect a relaxing, scenic boat ride or a wild roller coaster ride on the ocean!

Luggage limits for the Nusa Penida boat from Bali

All speedboats seem to have the same policy. 2x bags with a total of 30KG. However, none of them weigh your pockets. They stow them on the deck, covered with a large tarp so they don't get wet.

How to get from Lombok to Nusa Penida

Are you exploring the incredible island of Lombok and looking for a way to get to Nusa Penida from here? In the past this was a bit difficult and required a stopover in Gili Trawangan and/or Nusa Lembongan.

However, since 2022 there is a direct speedboat ferry from Lombok to Nusa Penida. This departs from Bangsal Port (the same port where you take the boat to the Gili’s).

This boat is called the Golden Queen Fast Boat and you can book it online at Bookaway for $32 for the 2.5 hour trip.
