Zaire Franklin: From seventh round pick to Colts defensive superstar!

Zaire Franklin is a crucial player in the Indianapolis Colts defense. The linebacker, drafted in the seventh round in 2018, has exceeded expectations and established himself as a defensive superstar. Last season, Franklin recorded 173 tackles, 3.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and two interceptions. These impressive performances earned him Pro Bowl and AP Second-Team All-Pro honors. Franklin, who played at Syracuse University and was recognized for his outstanding performance there, is considered an example of perseverance and success in the NFL.

However, Franklin faces a challenge as he recently underwent minor surgery on his ankle. Coach Shane Steichen has announced that his readiness for the upcoming training camp is in question. Nevertheless, there is hope for a quick return. Since 2022, Franklin has accumulated at least 167 tackles in each of the last three seasons and is expected by the Colts and their fans to be a key player in the defensive strategy.

New additions and defensive improvements

The Indianapolis Colts recently signed significant defensive reinforcements in NFL free agency. These include cornerback Charvarius Ward and safety Camryn Bynum. These additions were recognized nationally as important improvements to the team. Franklin himself praised the new players, particularly Bynum's versatility and energy, in an appearance on "Good Morning Football." He also highlighted Ward's competitive spirit and attitude as crucial to the team's success.

Bynum was signed for four years and a total of $60 million, while Ward signed a three-year, $54 million contract. With a defense that threw 16 interceptions last season, fifth in the NFL, the Colts have big ambitions. Nevertheless, the defense's performance could be improved throughout the 2024 season; they ranked 29th in yards allowed (361.2 YPG) and 24th in points allowed (25.1 PPG). The team also ranked 26th against the pass (229.4 YPG) and 24th against the run (131.8 YPG).

In addition to the aforementioned reinforcements, the Colts also signed defensive tackle Neville Gallimore and cornerback Corey Ballentine to improve depth on the roster. To further improve defensive performance, the Colts also replaced former defensive coordinator Gus Bradley with Lou Anarumo.

Zaire Franklin is optimistic about the new additions and his own impact on the defense next season. Despite his current health status, he remains an inspiring example for teammates and fans. The Colts have high hopes for his return and the improvements within the defense.
