Lever festival in Hausen: a festival of tradition and friendship!
Last weekend, Arnstadt's partner community Hausen in the Wiesental celebrated this year's leverage festival, a traditional event that is celebrated in memory of the famous writer Johann Peter Hebel. The festivities began on May 10th, the birthday of the Lebel, who was born in Basel in 1760 and is considered a pioneer of Alemannic dialect literature. The volunteer Martina Lang traveled to Hausen with members of the friendship association for city twinning to take part in the celebrations. Mayor Philipp Lotter and community employee warmly welcomed the guests, including friends from the former Wipfratal community under the direction of Uwe Greßler. The leverage is celebrated in cooperation with the Basel leverage company. A integral part of the program is the festive move, in which the oldest villagers lead the parade in a carriage drawn with horses. This is accompanied by the lever music that the village awakens early in the morning at 6 a.m. in historical costume. Kindergarten children presented poems, songs and dances on stage, which was already a festive mood in the morning.
traditions and honors
The move led the official guests from train station to the festival hall around 11:15 a.m. Honors and awards were awarded during the ceremony, and the school classes presented a varied cultural program. The mayor thanked everyone involved for their committed services as well as for traditional food, which was offered as part of the festival, including the "Hebelmähi", a delicacy from soup meat with potatoes and beetroot. However, the delegation from Arnstadt had its difficulties with the communication in the Alemannic dialect.
As part of the leverage festival, the exhibition on the festive day was also opened, the Hebel's origin from the Wiesental and its significant influence on the literature. In Hausen, memorial plaque and monument are reminiscent of the writer, and the former house of his family was converted into a museum in 2010. Hebel's manuscripts, first editions and various stories from his life's work are exhibited there.
a visit to the region
The day before the festival, the delegation from Arnstadt visited the Rötteln castle ruins. This impressive facility, which was created before 1250 and belongs to the Lörrach district, offers a breathtaking view of Germany, France and Switzerland. Another highlight of the leverage was the entertainment program in the pavilion, which could come up with music and different stalls.
The awarding of the Johann-Peter Hebel Prize, which is endowed with 10,000 euros, did not take place this year. This award is awarded every two years, the next award for 2026 is planned. The leverage festival remains an unmistakable opportunity to celebrate the local culture and community and to honor the deep roots of Johann Peter Hebel in his homeland.
The surroundings of Hausen is worth a journey, shaped by history, traditions and a warm community.
