Vietnamese film pioneer Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan awarded medal of honor!

Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, an influential figure in the Vietnamese film circuit, was recently honored with an award from the French government. During French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit in 2025, she received the medal from French Culture Minister Rachida Dati for her outstanding contributions to art and culture. This officer's medal, awarded to individuals with significant achievements in these fields, is an important step in intercultural cooperation between Vietnam and France.

Rachida Dati paid tribute to Dr. Lan especially for her influence that extends beyond Vietnam's borders. The connection between the two countries is through Dr. Lan's work was heavily emphasized, including as president of the Vietnam Cinema Promotion and Development Association. In this role, she not only promoted Vietnamese films, but also initiated significant collaborations with the French Embassy and French filmmakers.

A groundbreaking contribution to the film industry

Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, born in Hanoi in 1963, grew up in an artistic family and is the daughter of the folk artist Ngo Manh Lan and the actress Pham Ngoc Lan. Her academic career included studying at the VGIK National University of Cinematography in Moscow, where she developed a particular interest in French literature and art. Her 1999 dissertation focused on modernity and national character in Vietnamese cinema, which secured her reputation as an expert.

From 2012 to 2018, she served as Director of the Department of Cinema at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam. In this position, Dr. Lan film screenings in France and signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation between the Vietnamese Film Authority and CNC France in 2017. Since 2019, she has headed the Vietnam Cinema Promotion and Development Association and organized the Da Nang Asian Film Festival.

Recognition of international contributions

In 2022, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan honored with the title of “MPA Asia Pacific Copyright Educator of the Year” at the CineAsia Awards Ceremony in Bangkok. This award recognizes her efforts to protect the rights of filmmakers in Vietnam and her role in strengthening copyright law in the country. The recognition was announced by Andrew Sunshine, President of Film Expo Group, while Belinda Lui, President of MPA Asia Pacific, highlighted their achievements.

In her career, Dr. Lan has held numerous leadership positions in the film and culture industry. These include, among others, the chairwoman of the Theory and Criticism Committee of the Vietnam Cinema Association and the director of the Hanoi International Film Festival. Her publications have appeared in various newspapers and specialist magazines, and she has authored several books on cinema.

The awards that Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan has received so far are remarkable. These include the Second Class Labor Medal, the State Prize for Literature and Arts and the Asia-Pacific Copyright Contributor Awards. These honors reflect her continued dedication and the significant impact she has had on the development of Vietnamese film and the promotion of international cultural relations.

With her commitment and expertise, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan a key figure in promoting and protecting Vietnamese cinema on a global level. Her role as both an educator and a supporter of young talent is valued and recognized by the international community.
