Ernst von Bandels four seasons return to the Lippische Landesmuseum!

On May 15, 2025, the impressive group of sculptures "The four seasons" by the renowned sculptor Ernst von Bandel in the Lippisches State Museum was presented. This return to the artist's homeland is accepted with both historians and art lovers.

The event at the event included prominent personalities, including Jörg Düning-Gast, association leader, and Dr. Michael Zell, director of the Lippische Landesmuseum. Günter Weigel, Managing Director of Lippe Tourismus, as well as the tour guides Cornelia Müller-Hisje and Carl-Heinz Helwig were also present. Jörg Düning-Gast expressed his joy about the purchase and the successful cooperation with the donations, while Dr. Cell the figures called "real blast".

historical context and first steps of Bandel

Ernst von Bandel, who was born on May 17, 1800 in Ansbach, was not only sculptor, but also the creator of the famous Hermann Monument. He received his artistic training at the “Buschule of the Academy” in Munich after he started developing his own designs at the age of 16. It is particularly worth mentioning in Italy between 1825 and 1827, which contributed decisively to his artistic career. Bandel later married Karoline von Kohlhagen, who sustainably supported him in his ambitions.

The sculptures of the group "The Four Seasons" were manufactured from 1843 and represent detailed children's figures that symbolize the different seasons. The faces of Bandel's daughter Angelika (spring) and son Armin (summer), who are immortalized in the characters, are striking.

Return of the sculptures to the local museum

The around 30,000 euro sculpture group was acquired for the museum with the support of Lippe Tourismus and Marketing GmbH. These figures, which were originally in family property, came to Dresden via several stations and were returned to the former owners after reunification. Cornelia Müller-Hisje discovered her shortly before the planned sale and acquired it for the Lippische State Museum.

It is important that Ernst von Bandels widow already offered the artist's estate to the city of Detmold, but this was rejected. The acquisition of the sculptures complements the collection of Ernst von Bandel and the HermannSdemmal, which is always in the public interest.

celebrations for the 225th birthday

On May 18, 2025, Ernst von Bandel's 225th birthday is also celebrated. Several events are planned on the occasion of these celebrations, including a special leadership entitled "Mythos Varuslacht and the HermannSdemmal" at 3 p.m. and a picture lecture "225 years Ernst von Bandel - more than just the Hermann Monument!" at 4:30 p.m. Entry to the museum and participation in the events is free of charge, which is a perfect opportunity for interested parties to learn more about the legacy of Bandel.

The sculpture group will now be shown in the permanent exhibition of the museum, which already includes exhibitions on Bandel as an architect, sculptor and painter, including its sketches and blueprints. This not only recognizes his artistic work, but also a fundamental piece of cultural history is kept alive.
