Gotthard Tunnel 2025: closed for 36 nights – plan alternative routes now!

The Gotthard Tunnel, a central transport connection in Switzerland, will be closed for a total of 36 nights in 2025. This happens as part of necessary cleaning and maintenance work. The closing times are as follows: from June 16th to 18th, from June 23rd to 27th, from September 8th to 12th, from September 15th to 19th, from September 22nd to 26th, and from September 29th to October 3rd. There will also be further closures on October 6th and 7th. On the specified days the tunnel is closed between 8pm and 5am, with no restrictions on weekends. Travelers are advised to use alternative routes such as the San Bernardino route (A13) or the Simplon Pass to avoid traffic jams.

The closure times have been chosen to be mostly during the night to minimize disruption to traffic. Around six million vehicles use this tunnel every year, especially from southwest Germany. With a length of 16.9 kilometers, the Gotthard Tunnel is the fourth longest road tunnel in the world and was opened in 1980 after a construction period of ten years. The tunnel is particularly well known for its statistics on traffic density and the regular traffic jams that often result in traffic having to be processed in blocks. This fact is reinforced by the fact that the Brenner route is not recommended due to bridge work, which makes the alternatives even more important.

Regular closures

In addition to the special maintenance closures, the tunnel is also regularly closed once a week, usually from Wednesday to Thursday between 11pm and 1am. This enables ongoing maintenance work and contributes to traffic safety. For travelers who accidentally arrive in front of a closed tunnel, there is the option of staying overnight at the Gotthard Camping RV park in Andermatt.

The upcoming closures are an essential factor when planning trips across the Alps. This tunnel plays an important role, especially for border traffic to Italy, which is why competent information and good alternatives are crucial. The maintenance work is necessary to guarantee the safety and efficiency of traffic in the long term. The tunnel's position as a central traffic artery between northern and southern Europe is also undisputed.

Given the statistical significance of the Gotthard Tunnel and the upcoming maintenance work, it is advisable for travelers to find out about the planned closure times in good time and to adjust their travel plans if necessary. This could avoid unnecessary stress and delays during the trip.
