Cultural country party 2025: 40,000 art lovers against the right!
The 36th “Cultural Country Party” (KLP) in Wendland will take place this year from Ascension Day to Pentecost. Around 40,000 art lovers are expected until June 9th, who can look forward to a diverse program. The motto of the event is "Solidarity. Diverse. Stand up against the right!", which aims to draw attention to current social developments. At a time when the rise of right-wing populist views is increasingly noticeable in Wendland, such initiatives are more important than ever. Süddeutsche.de describes the KLP as a forum for protest and awareness.
In the Lüchow-Dannenberg district there are reports of the influence of “Reich citizens”, right-wing hooligans and ethnic settler families who are buying up farms and becoming increasingly involved in schools, daycare centers and fire departments. The KLP has its roots in the anti-nuclear power movement and a long protest against the final storage facility in Gorleben. This makes it all the more important that numerous initiatives work for diversity and against discrimination.
Diverse program and activities
A total of 87 points with promotions, events and exhibitions are offered. The program includes, among other things, historical reviews of the NSDAP elections of 1932, in which 65% of the votes were cast in Wendland, as well as the topic of forced labor. An “Alliance against Right Wendland/Altmark” was founded to support affected neighbors and initiatives. Campaigns to promote diversity and combat racism are central components of the KLP.
Particularly noteworthy are the anti-racist multimedia network project “I have a dream” in Clenze and the weekly walks against the nuclear storage facility in Gorleben, which have been taking place for over 15 years. In the Rundlingsmuseum in Lübeln there is also a job fair under the motto “Vacation becomes life”, which is intended to promote local perspectives.
Economic importance and visitor friendliness
The KLP has not only cultural but also economic importance for the region. Restaurateurs and hotels are fully booked during the event, which is of great economic benefit to merchants in the area. A 320-page travel guide offers comprehensive information on the various providers and activities and is even ordered beyond the borders of Germany, as far as Austria and Denmark.
Visitors will also find a etiquette guide in the travel guide, which lists rules of conduct for participants. Travel and commuting to events has increased, and bike rentals are available for rail travelers to explore the region in an environmentally friendly way.
Critical actions against nuclear waste
Of course, Gorleben remains a central point of the protests, with critical actions directed against the temporary storage of nuclear waste. Further actions are planned for June 6th in particular, in which the citizens' initiative calls for better protection for the interim storage facility, which is approved until 2036.
The KLP is therefore more than just a cultural event; it is a living symbol against right-wing extremism and for diversity, underlined by numerous workshops on anti-fascism, feminism and sustainability. Information about the events and promotions is available on the Cultural Country Party website available.
