Vacation in Turkey: Shocking burger prices at the airport!

Many Germans are looking forward to their summer vacation, which often takes them to distant countries, and Turkey is one of the most popular travel destinations. This picturesque country not only offers beautiful beaches, but also a rich culture and diverse food options. Especially at Istanbul Airport, where many tourists spend time - whether arriving, transiting or departing - travelers are confronted with expensive prices.

A recent example shows the high costs in fast food chains such as Burger King, where a picture of a menu makes holidaymakers' eyes overflow. A Double Whopper costs a whopping 23 euros, while a grilled beef burger costs 18.50 euros. These prices have shocked users on Reddit and compared them to rip-offs, fueling discussion about the high costs at airports.

Prices that shock

A holidaymaker expressed his displeasure about the extreme prices at Burger King in Istanbul Airport on Facebook. He documented his experience, which now has almost 1.5 million views (as of September 11, 2024). The prices are extremely high for visitors: a Whopper costs 22 euros, a Triple Whopper even costs 30 euros. For menus you have to dig even deeper into your pocket - a Double Whopper menu costs 26.50 euros, and the Rodeo Whopper menu costs 24.50 euros. Even the simple Big King and Double Cheeseburger menus aren't exactly cheap at 21.50 euros.

Numerous users on Facebook reacted negatively to this pricing. Some recommended finding alternatives outside the airport to escape the usury. The behavioral economist Gianluca Scheidegger explains that the high prices in airports are caused by high operating costs, security checks and a virtual monopoly of providers. This gives airport catering establishments the opportunity to offer prices that would be unimaginable elsewhere.

Frustration over additional holiday costs

It's not just the high prices at Burger King that are causing dissatisfaction among German holidaymakers. Another holidaymaker reported on a mini visit to the doctor in Turkey, who asked him to pay 800 euros. This was also discussed on Facebook and was met with great outrage.

Turkey remains a popular holiday destination: in 2024, the German Travel Association (DRV) voted the country the most popular travel destination for Germans, which underlines the country's enduring appeal and fascination. But it is becoming increasingly clear that vacationers must be prepared to pay significantly more than they might have expected for some amenities during their trip.

So if you are planning your stay in Turkey, you should carefully consider the additional costs and especially the prices at Istanbul Airport in order not to be disappointed with the price-performance ratio.
