Prince William: The new King of Hearts delights the nation!
In June 1982, shortly after the birth of Prince William, Princess Diana made the comments in an interview with BBC reporter Jennie Bond. She emphasized that the country is lucky to have William. This early vision for her son seems to be confirmed in the general feeling of Britons today. According to a recent YouGov poll, Prince William is the most popular member of the Royal Family, followed by his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales.
The survey finds that 81% of respondents have a positive opinion of William. Jennie Bond describes him as approachable and modern in his approach, which earns him additional sympathy. William is perceived as the “King of Hearts” even though he officially still has to wait for his throne.
Commitment and modernization
Prince William continues to be committed, especially in social issues. He plans to modernize and improve the Duchy of Cornwall. He also visits people on site incognito every four to six weeks to get a direct feel for the needs of the population. His new secretary, Will Bax, describes him as ambitious, warm and persuasive, qualities that continue to endear him to the public.
Although the country's sentiment towards William is positive, the polls also reflect the wave of nostalgia surrounding his mother, Princess Diana. A YouGov poll shows that 72% of Brits have a positive opinion of her, with 34% expressing a “very positive” opinion. In comparison, 67% have a positive opinion of King Charles and 60% of the monarchy as a whole.
Popularity over time
Positive reviews for Diana are high across all age groups. What is particularly noteworthy is that 79% of 25-49 year olds perceive it positively. In contrast, 25-26% of people over 50 have a negative opinion of her. This discrepancy is reflected not only in the polls, but also in the general perception of the royals, which has changed over the years.
Prince Harry's popularity has fallen to its lowest point at 39%, a drop of 6 points since September, while Meghan, Duchess of Sussex is also not becoming more popular at 28%. In contrast, William remains firmly at the top of the popularity rankings. Prince Andrew has the lowest popularity among the royals, with just 6% positive opinion, with such a high level of negative opinion that 85% of respondents are estimated to think negatively of him.
Overall, the Windsor dynasty remains a fascinating subject for the British, especially given the nostalgic memories of Diana and the significant place her son William holds today.
