Ultimate camping checklist: Everything in one place
Ultimate camping checklist: Everything in one place
Our ultimate camping checklist is intentionally comprehensive so that everything is listed
After years of packing and repacking in preparation for various expeditions, I have finally made it - to the point where I have a table with all of my equipment next to its weight (full and empty) so that I can predict how heavy my is a pack. Most campers are probably far less pedantic, but it is not to deny that we are all proud to do our equipment just right.
In order to help campers put your equipment in order, I have put together the ultimate camping checklist-deliberately comprehensively so that everything you need is listed, be it for a weekend backpack trip through the wilderness or a longer family vacation.
The ultimate camping checklist
The ultimate camping checklist is designed in such a way that it can be used in layers. The 10 essentials apply to everyone. After that, you can concentrate on different sections depending on your taste and needs.
The sections are organized as follows:
- Backpack travel
- Family and autoCamping
- Clothing
- Kitchen & campfire
- Toilet article & personal
- Other
Where relevant, I linked to certain products that I use and recommend. In the UK I do almost all of my outdoor purchases either from Cotswold Outdoor or Ellis Brigham and buy all my cards from Stanfords in London. In the United States, I recommend either Rei or Backcountry.

The 10 essentials
Originally designed by The Mountainers in the 1930s, the "classic" 10 Essentials in 2003 were updated to keep up with modern equipment and now to follow a "system" approach (ie card and compass became a navigation "system"). The following should always be packed when you step into the wilderness.

Backpacking checklist
These are the basic things for camping in backpacking. I personally always try to keep things as easy as possible (well below 15 kg/33 lbs), so I often do not take everything on the list depending on the climate and terrain.
I tend to only take a cooking pan (from which I usually eat) and take a cup for my morning brew. Depending on the length of the trip, I also do without trekking sticks and daily backpack and compress my main truck pack for day hikes and summit climbs.
