Vietnamese gymnasts conquer the world: gold for Xuan Thien in Bulgaria!
The Vietnamese gymnastics team achieved impressive success at the 2025 World Gymnastics Championships in Bulgaria, which took place from May 8 to 11. Particularly noteworthy is the athlete Dang Ngoc Xuan Thien, who won the gold medal in the pommel horse competition. Thien took first place with a total score of 14,266 points, which consisted of a difficulty (D-score) of 5.9 and an execution rating (E-score) of 8,366, securing Vietnam's first gold medal in the World Cup system since 2018. Head coach Truong Minh Sang cited systematic training and investment as key factors in this success. Nguyen Van Khanh Phong also attracted attention with a silver medal in wrestling.
During the competition, Thien delivered an outstanding performance in the qualifying run with a perfect landing, earning him an E-score of 8,950 and a total of 14,850 points - the highest score achieved in a major tournament worldwide in 2025. This was a clear difference from his performance in the final, where he had difficulty landing and lost about 0.3 points. Despite this mistake, it was enough for Thien to edge out Lee Chih Kai of Taiwan and Zeinolla Idrissov of Kazakhstan, who posted D-scores of 5.8 and 5.7, respectively. Thien won by just 0.033 points.
Outlook for future competitions
The Vietnamese sports administration has already developed ambitious plans for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 33), aiming to win two to three gold medals in gymnastics. However, the competition is strong, especially from teams from Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia. After the World Challenge Cup, the team will continue to train and participate in major tournaments, including the Asian Cup in Korea in June 2025 and the World Cup in Indonesia in October 2025.
Another promising athlete is Dinh Phuong Thanh, who has a chance of winning a medal in the parallel bars competition, although here too the competition should not be underestimated. To ensure future success, the Vietnamese sports administration plans to send young talents abroad for long-term training.
In summary, the recent success of Thien and the Vietnamese gymnastics team shows that continuous support and targeted investments in competitive sports are bearing fruit. Given this positive development, Vietnam will look forward to the upcoming international competitions with great anticipation.
