In this quick guide, I'll cover everything you need to know about the zipline experience on the Cetina River near Omiš, including how to book a good deal and what to expect!

First, what is a zip line?

Basically, a zip line (also spelled zipline or flying fox) is a long piece of steel wire rope that you can slide down using a steel pulley. These steel wires are stretched over long distances, usually through canyons or across rivers, and on a slope, allowing gravity to do all the work.

Ziplining is an amazing experience and a truly safe adrenaline activity. If you find yourself in Omiš or Split then you are in luck because this is one of the best zip line tours in Europe!

About the Omiš zipline in the Cetina Gorge

Croatia is truly an adventure traveler’s dream! While there are many zipline tours in the country, the Cetina Zipline Polygon is one of the most famous.

Besides the natural beauty and incredible views, here are some reasons why.

The course lies in a huge limestone gorge formed by the Cetina River, the richest river in Croatia and the longest in Dalmatia. This river is also world famous for its remarkable karst spring, called the Eye of the Earth because it resembles a dragon's eye when viewed from above.

The Omiš zipline tour lasts approximately 3 hours, starting at the top of the lush limestone peaks and slowly zigzagging down the gorge into the green valley below.

Along the route you will cross beautiful rivers, dense pine forests and rocky scree slopes, with each descent a little different from the last.

Is the Omiš zipline the longest in Croatia?

The Omiš zipline course in the Cetina Gorge is probably the most beautiful ziplining location in Croatia, but it is not the longest in Croatia.

The longest route is the Krk Zipline Tour on the island of Krk (Croatia's largest island). This course is 2400m long, just a little longer than that.

However, in terms of a single run, the first line on the Cetina Canyon course is the longest at over 700 meters!

There are many other places where travelers can go ziplining in Croatia. These include Plitvice Lakes (the longest horizontal zipline in Europe), Tučepi and Dubrovnik.

How to book a Cetina zipline tour from Omis or Split

So, how do I book?

On the last day of the Sail Croatia cruise on the Adriatic, I went zip-lining in Omiš (highly recommended). They arranged the trip including transportation from Split to Omiš.

However, if you are already in Split or Omiš, you can also book this trip online. I recommend booking the ziplining tour with GetYourGuide as they offer a full refund in case of bad weather.

What to expect on the Omiš zipline route

So decided to take the plunge? Or maybe you need a little more motivation.

Here is a summary of my experience on the Zipline Omiš course with photos to help you understand what to expect. If you want to surprise it, I suggest booking the trip and skipping this section!

Starting point

The starting point for the Omiš Zipline course is in Podašpilje, which is about 15 minutes from the town of Omiš or 40 minutes from Split with the included van transport.

From here, your professional guides will help you with your equipment and after a short walk up the canyon ridge, you will complete a short training session on the training grounds.

This is a very short cable almost at floor level.

Ziplining Tip: The rule is that you must always hold the “brake” with both hands. This brake is very sensitive. So, to avoid embarrassment during your training run, try to brake gently.

Depending on the size of the group, you will divide into small teams, each with two guides (one at the top and a second guide at the bottom of the slope).

The first cable – 700 METERS!

The first cable is by far the wildest and most impressive descent on the entire polygon. This is the descent that makes the Cetina Canyon zipline experience so famous. You start at the highest point of the route and glide down a 700 meter long slope at over 150 meters above the ground!

This run also offers spectacular views, so enjoy the ride!

More than 7 ziplines down the canyon

I won't spoil it too much for you by revealing everything about this exciting experience (some things are better than surprise).

However, over the next two hours you will go through a series of 7 more short cables and long cables. Each one is a little different, but here are two more that stand out.

Cable Number 5 – This is the slowest cable route and your professional guides offer you to ride in tandem with your friend or partner if you wish. This is great because one person does the braking and the other has the option to film with a phone or GoPro if they wish.

Cable Number 7 – This cable is incredible! You slide straight down the gorge and cross the Cetina River below. The view is incredible!

Tips for zip lining in Omis Croatia

Here are some quick tips and things you should know before embarking on the ziplining adventure in Omiš, Croatia!

• Das Mindestalter für das Ziplining-Erlebnis beträgt 7 Jahre.
• Das Höchstgewicht beträgt 140 Kilogramm.
• Es gibt kein Höchstalter – wir hatten eine 72-jährige Dame in unserem Kurs – und sie liebte es!
• Die Ziplining-Touren können in der geschäftigeren Sommersaison problemlos ausgebucht werden – buchen Sie im Voraus!
• Zwischen den Kabeln ist ein kurzer Fußweg erforderlich. Aber das ist keineswegs schwierig.
• Im Sommer können die Temperaturen sehr heiß werden. Ich empfehle die Tour am späten Nachmittag für das beste Wetter (und Fotos).

What to take with you on the Omis Ziplining Tour

Have you never been ziplining? Here are a few things I recommend you bring with you.

• Gute Schuhe – Trailrunner, Turnschuhe oder Sportschuhe sind geeignetes Schuhwerk für das Ziplining
• Kleiner Tagesrucksack – praktisch zum Verstauen von Telefon oder Brieftasche, damit sie nicht aus der Tasche fallen
• Wasserflasche – das Erlebnis dauert 3 Stunden. Ich reise immer mit einer Grayl Purifying Flasche (reinigt Leitungswasser überall auf der Welt)
• Shorts oder Hosen – du musst einen Klettergurt tragen, wähle etwas Bequemes (Mädchen, ich würde keinen Rock oder Kleid empfehlen)
• GoPro und Halterung – da Ihre Hände beschäftigt sind, empfehle ich eine Helmhalterung, Brusthalterung oder Beißhalterung (mein Filmmaterial wurde auf einer Hero 10 gefilmt)
