The Amigos conquer the charts: Karl-Heinz's emotional new beginning!
Karl-Heinz Ulrich from the duo The Amigos lost his wife Doris (†71) in January 2024 after a long and difficult battle with breast cancer. This tragic loss led him to consider ending his music career. “It was a very difficult time for me,” explains Karl-Heinz, “but I knew that Doris would have wanted me to continue.” As a result, he decided to continue his musical journey and reach number 1 in the album charts for the 16th time in his career.
The new album “Voices of the Night” is not only another success for the brothers, it is also a personal homage to the late Doris. Karl-Heinz dedicates this number 1 to his wife and continues to feel connected to her through music. The song “Strong for You” in particular is a way for him to deal with his pain. It's more than just a song; it is a musical love letter to Doris.
The return to the stage
Since April 2024, Karl-Heinz has been touring Germany again with his brother Bernd. He emphasizes that music is not only his life, but also a way to be there for his fans. “Doris would have wanted that,” he emphasizes, describing his situation as an emotional new beginning.
The history of the Amigos is marked by numerous strokes of fate. The Ulrich brothers founded the band in 1970, but their big breakthrough did not come until 2006, when they appeared on “Achims Hitparade” and won the title “Musikantenkaiser”. They had already gone through difficult times, such as the departure of a bandmate in 1980 and the death of their keyboardist Günther Zimmer from cancer in 1985. Witold Piwonski was brought in as a replacement member, but he also suffered a severe blow of fate in 2000: a stroke, after which he remained in a vegetative state for eight years.
Music as a coping tool
Despite these challenges, the brothers were continually motivated by their fans to keep going. "Music gives us support. We process our experiences in our songs," explains Karl-Heinz. Even after Doris's death, music remains a central part of her life. Karl-Heinz and Bernd plan to continue producing music, not only for themselves, but also for their fans and in memory of Doris.
Bernd has already announced another special song for the upcoming album, which is due to be released in 2025: “We never stop”. This motto reflects the tireless spirit of the Amigos who, despite tragedy and loss, believe in their passion and want to continue their musical journey.
