Hotels in focus: This is how they trick guests with late check-outs!

In the hotel sector, the timing of check-in and check-out is a crucial factor for many guests. As a rule, guests are only allowed to move into their rooms in the afternoon, often from 2 p.m., while check-out must take place by 12 p.m. the following day at the latest. This practice means that guests who only stay one night often stay in their room for less than 24 hours. Hotels use these specifications to react flexibly to bookings and increase their sales, as Nordkurier reports.

One reason for the strict schedules is the staff shortage that is currently affecting the hotel industry. Stefan Dinnendahl from the IHA points out that there is a particular lack of sufficient cleaning teams. This makes early check-ins and late check-outs difficult. In large hotel chains, check-in times are on average between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., while smaller hotels often offer more flexibility, although an earlier check-out is usually required.

Flexible times and additional costs

It is advisable to request different arrival or departure times in advance, especially if bookings are made directly via the hotel's website. During your stay there is also the opportunity to negotiate check-out, which is often met with understanding. However, if guests arrive earlier or wish to stay after check-out, luggage can usually be stored at reception, providing additional flexibility.

Hotels can charge surcharges of up to 50 euros for late check-outs, a practice that is met with displeasure by many guests. If complaints arise, it is possible to express them via hotel portals or consumer advice centers in order to put pressure on the hotels.

Cancellation policy and pricing

Another aspect that interests travelers is the cancellation conditions, which depend on the tariff booked. According to information from hotel-berlin.de, daily tariffs can be canceled free of charge until 6:00 p.m. on the day of arrival. There are special conditions for non-refundable or early bird rates: Early bird rates with 10% savings can be canceled free of charge up to 3 days before arrival, and with 15% savings up to 7 days before arrival. There are also special offers such as “stay 3 nights, save 20%”, which can also be canceled free of charge up to 7 days before arrival.

It is important to provide credit card details when booking as a prepayment of the total cost of the room will be required after the free cancellation period has expired. Even if you cancel later or do not show up, significant costs will be incurred, usually 90% of the total stay or 90% of the first night for a daily rate.
