Suitcase drama on Mallorca: Dinslaken couple gets an Uber surprise!

Leony Busch and Michele Stutzmann from Dinslaken (NRW) flew to Mallorca for the first time on May 10, 2025. However, the anticipation of the holiday was quickly dampened when they took an Uber taxi to their hotel upon arrival. The driver let them out and drove away with their suitcases, leaving the couple in a desperate situation.

Leony and Michele tried to run after the car and called out to the driver, but he didn't respond. They then waited outside the hotel for half an hour in the hope that the driver would come back. The suitcases contained important items such as clothing, cosmetics, jewelry and medication. Luckily, Leony had her handbag with valuables and documents.

Desperate cry for help and initial steps

After unsuccessful attempts to contact the Uber company, they filed a police report. However, there was little hope of recovering the suitcases because the license plate was unknown. To deal with the situation, Leony launched a call for help on Facebook and posted a picture of the driver.

Hours passed with no news as Leony washed her clothes by hand. Michele tried to deal with the situation with humor, but Leony felt emotionally burdened and considered canceling the vacation. The turning point finally came the next morning: another Uber driver contacted Facebook and offered to help. He found the suitcases and contacted the hotel.

Happy twist and tips for travelers

The suitcases were eventually returned to the hotel reception and nothing was missing. Leony and Michele were able to continue their vacation in Mallorca as planned. This experience highlights the issues surrounding lost luggage that can affect many travelers. According to the Mallorca newspaper, there is a clear procedure in case suitcases go missing.

The first steps include reporting the loss to the lost and found desk and completing a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Ideally, this should be done both directly on site and online with the airline. For package tours, it is important to inform the tour operator immediately.

To make travel easier, travelers can use a suitcase tracker like Apple Airtags to determine the location of their luggage. In the event of loss, it is also advisable to replace necessary items and keep the receipts so that you can later submit a claim for reimbursement to the airline.

Travelers should know that a suitcase is considered lost after three weeks and that the airline is obliged to replace the contents, with a maximum liability limit of around 1,900 euros. In addition, holidaymakers on package holidays have the opportunity to claim a reduction if their suitcases are missing.

Leony and Michele came out of their adventure with a positive ending. Nevertheless, the experience remains a valuable reminder of the importance of preparing for unexpected situations on vacation.
