Modernization of mobility: rail transport should boom tourism!

The issue of railway development is becoming increasingly important, especially when it comes to promoting tourism. Hospitality and Tourism Association President Zak Topuzi has highlighted the potential benefits of improved rail infrastructure. The construction of new railway lines could not only promote the country's economic development, but also significantly reduce the costs of tourism offerings. According to Topuzi, rail transport is the only solution to meet the growing demand in the tourism sector.

A key aim of this initiative is to improve passenger transport to avoid traffic congestion during peak travel times. Topuzi also highlights the need for a modern tram line in the capital. Such a line could not only help modernize city services, but also significantly improve mobility.

Railway infrastructure and tourism

Topuzi proposes introducing trams or other means of transport in Tirana to promote both citizen mobility and the tourist experience. A carefully planned and well-built railway could even become a tourist attraction in itself. The president expresses the hope of being active in elite tourism in the next five years and offering relevant services. This would not only increase the attractiveness of the country, but also create new jobs and strengthen the local economy.

The dimensions of the rail network in Germany, which can serve as a comparison, also show a comprehensive context. It currently covers a route length of around 39,200 km, with Deutsche Bahn being the largest network operator with around 33,440 km. Passenger traffic has increased by over 50% since 1994, while freight traffic has even increased by almost 90%. DB InfraGo trains cover more than 1 billion kilometers every year, which underlines the relevance of a functioning rail network.

Challenges in the rail network

However, reality shows that the rail network in Germany and beyond is facing significant challenges. While the rail network is becoming more important, it is also shrinking as a whole, which can be seen in overloaded routes. In 2024, 1,169 km will already be classified as congested. This highlights the need for sensible investments in rail infrastructure.

Environmental friendliness plays another crucial role. Today, 62% of the federal rail network is already electrified, with the goal of increasing this number to 75% by 2030. An increased focus on rail transport could help to shift transport services from road to rail and thus contribute to relieving the burden on the environment.

In summary, the expansion of the rail network could not only improve citizens' mobility, but also increase tourist attractiveness. It remains to be hoped that those responsible will recognize the importance of the rail infrastructure and take appropriate measures.
