Navigation misery in South Tyrol: holidaymakers are stuck with a caravan!
On Pentecost Saturday, June 7, 2025, a German tourist duo in the municipality of Ritten near Bozen, South Tyrol, experienced a frightening incident when their navigation device misled them and left them in a hopeless situation with their vehicle and caravan trailer. The town of Sill, where the couple was located, is known for its narrow mountain roads that are unsuitable for large rigs, which contributed to their predicament. The Bolzano volunteer fire department was alerted to help the holidaymakers.
The firefighters moved out quickly and were able to successfully free the caravan trailer. They towed him with a fire engine to the nearest passing point so that the duo could finally continue their journey independently. The origin of the holidaymakers is currently unknown.
Traffic jams and traffic problems in the region
During the incident, there were significant traffic jams of up to 45 kilometers in length on major traffic routes, particularly the Tauern Autobahn (A10) in Austria. These traffic jams continued on Whitsunday, when many travelers were heading south. Experts estimate that return traffic on Monday could also be problematic, particularly due to construction sites and tunnel work.
A serious accident that previously occurred on the A22 Brenner motorway is contributing to the current tense traffic situation. On Thursday, July 6, 2023, a spectacular accident occurred on the northbound lane of the highway shortly after 2:00 p.m. A truck loaded with cars drove into a car and a caravan, causing the caravan to be completely dismantled. However, the two occupants of the caravan remained uninjured.
Deployment of rescue workers
As a result of the accident, the northern lane of the Brenner Motorway had to be completely closed, which led to further traffic disruptions. A diversion has been set up via the Neumarkt exit. Tragically, at the end of the traffic jam near Margreid, there was a subsequent accident between two cars, in which two passengers were taken to the hospital in Bolzano with minor injuries. The Neumarkt volunteer fire department, the White Cross of Neumarkt and Salurn, as well as the road police and the A22 road service were involved in the incident.
The traffic situation in South Tyrol remains tense, and both holidaymakers and emergency services are required to overcome these challenges. The confusion caused by inaccurate navigation systems and unexpected traffic accidents poses a constant danger to road users in this popular holiday region.
Further details about this incident and the associated traffic jams can be found in the reports from Mercury and South Tyrol News to find.
