Tourism in the Ruhr area is booming in the first quarter of 2025 with 988,000 guests and 1.9 million overnight stays, thanks to large events.
The Ruhr area is booming: record numbers of guests and overnight stays in 2025!
Tourism in the Ruhr area will also show positive development in 2025. In the first quarter, the region recorded impressive figures: almost 988,000 guest arrivals and 1.9 million overnight stays were counted. These values are above the level of the record year 2024, indicating continued positive momentum. While the national trend shows a decline in tourism, the Ruhr area not only remains stable, but also achieves growth that is above the national average. This positive balance is particularly reflected in the March figures.
In March 2025, guest arrivals rose by 7.3 percent to almost 381,000, while overnight stays rose by around 5.0 percent to just over 738,000. The contribution of foreign guests is particularly noteworthy: their arrivals grew by 10.5 percent, which corresponds to around 66,380 arrivals from abroad and an increase of 16.0 percent compared to March 2024. Overnight stays by foreign guests also rose by almost 16.0 percent to 124,400 in the same period.
Reasons for growth
The positive development in March 2025 is due to several factors. An important aspect are the large trade fairs and the diverse range of events in the region. An outstanding example is the Equitana, which took place in Essen and attracted numerous visitors.
