St. Peter-Ording: A move towards sustainable tourism for the future!

St. Peter-Ording, a sought-after holiday destination in the North Friesland district, is faced with the challenge of shaping its tourism future sustainably. On July 10, 2025, the municipality took significant steps to further expand tourism as the most important industry. The main aim is to reconcile growing tourist interest with environmental and social needs. Mayor Boris Pfau emphasizes the need for this balance and advocates the development of a “resilient strategy” in collaboration with the population. The focus was on a comprehensive development concept, which is developed in dialogue with locals in order to preserve the quality of life of citizens and at the same time promote economic growth. This is also supported by an accompanying study that records the spending behavior of tourists as well as their tax and employment contributions.

However, in order to meet these goals, the municipality has decided on a comprehensive sustainability strategy. Loud corsus This strategy appeared as part of the local development concept “Sustainable Sankt Peter-Ording” and was decided with majority political approval at the end of January 2024. The strategy was developed in collaboration with various stakeholders, including community representatives, local politicians and volunteer experts from areas such as nature conservation, healthcare and tourism.

Areas of action of the sustainability strategy

The sustainability strategy includes three central areas of action that are intended to pave the way in a more environmentally friendly direction:

  • Umwelt- und Ressourcenschutz sowie nachhaltige Mobilität
  • Qualitativer Tourismus und nachhaltiges Wirtschaften
  • Gemeinschaftliches Leben sowie nachhaltiges Bauen und Wohnen

A total of 13 strategic and 40 operational goals as well as 119 concrete measures were defined. The focus is on creating sustainable tourism offerings, transparent working conditions and preserving nature. The municipality also wants to promote local public transport and strengthen alternative mobility concepts in order to reduce dependence on individual motorized transport.

needs of the population

Another important aspect taken into account in the strategy is the needs of citizens. The establishment of permanent and affordable housing as well as the development of a needs-based infrastructure for all generations are central concerns. Educational infrastructure and basic medical care are also highlighted as essential topics. To address these issues, the community held a community event on March 19th. The aim was to present the strategy and incorporate the voices of the residents into further development.

With this sustainable orientation, St. Peter-Ording not only wants to shine as an attractive holiday destination, but also preserve the quality of life for its citizens. How NDR informed, the community will rely on innovative solutions and the active participation of the population in order to best master the challenges of the future.
