TUI struggles with late bookings: increase in sales despite winter loss!

TUI AG recorded declines in sales and profits in the winter half of 2023, which is partly due to the late Easter date. As the South German newspaper reported, sales fell to just under 8.6 billion euros in the period in question, which corresponds to an increase of almost eight percent compared to the previous year. However, the adjusted operating loss (EBIT) fell by 15 percent to 156 million euros.

The second quarter was particularly weak due to the lack of Easter business. Overall, shareholders have to accept a total loss of almost 392 million euros, but this is a decrease of six percent compared to the previous year. For the current financial year, TUI is aiming for an increase in sales of 5 to 10 percent, while adjusted operating profit is expected to increase by 7 to 10 percent.

Popular travel destinations during the Easter holidays

Customers who choose to book with TUI spend an average of ten days on holiday and spend around 3,295 euros. The general booking situation is also showing improvements: The German Travel Association (DRV) expects sales growth of 12 percent for the summer compared to the previous year and an increase in travelers of around 6 percent. In the last few months, 6 percent more people have booked package holidays, which shows the popularity of classic travel offers.

Future outlook for TUI AG

For the entire tourism year 2024/25, an increase in sales of 11 percent and an increase in travelers of 4 percent are forecast. TUI had around 3.7 million customers in the last financial quarter to the end of December, an increase of 6 percent compared to the previous year. Particular successes are reported in the areas of the group's own hotel chains and cruises.

The industry is also set for an upward trend after last year, in which Germans spent 83.4 billion euros on travel (an increase of 5.6 percent compared to the previous year). TUI expects 2024 to be a record year for the travel industry, supported by increased booking trends and continued demand for travel.
