Vacation in a historical monument: Freudenbergers renovate 1740s farm

In Oberprechtal, a district of the municipality of Elzach, Christoph and Constanze Freudenberger have lovingly restored a historic farm from 1740. The now award-winning building was prepared with the aim of making it a holiday accommodation in the region's architectural monument. With its completion in 2023, the Freudenbergers, who act as the building owner with Hederle 3 GbR, are setting an example for contemporary monument preservation and gentle conversion. The renovation was carried out by the company bau kultur landschaft gmbh under the direction of qualified engineer Florian Rauch.

The farm, a historic Black Forest house, has typical features that reflect its long history. The ceilings are low, which is due to the height of people in the 18th century and their heating methods. Christoph Freudenberger, who is now 74 years old, recommends visitors to watch their heads as there are low passageways in the house. These authentic conditions are intended not only to give guests a true picture of the way of life back then, but also to sharpen its value.

The design of the holiday accommodation

During the renovation, the Freudenbergers relied on careful repairs in order to preserve the original appearance of the building. In this way, you avoid substantial losses and keep the costs for more extensive structural changes lower. The special features of the holiday apartment include wood burning and cooking on a traditional wood stove.

The surroundings of the Hederle Hof are characterized by a pristine landscape with meadows, forests and a small stream. Adjacent to the historic property is a bee house that has been converted into a garden house and is also available to guests. All of this enables a special experience for holiday guests who want to experience a historical way of life.

A prize for sustainable tourism

Christoph and Constanze Freudenberger received a tourism award for their dedicated work on the monument. This award not only recognizes their love of history, but also the combination of monument preservation and tourism for sustainable holiday experiences. The income generated from renting out the holiday apartment covers ongoing operating costs and secures provisions for the maintenance of the building, which contributes to the preservation of the historical heritage.

At a time when history and modern tourism needs have to go hand in hand, the Freudenbergers are setting a positive example for the gentle use and preservation of architectural monuments.
