Visiting Venice: compulsory entry will be extended in 2026!
Travelers to Italy who want to visit Venice will still have to expect an entrance fee in 2026. From April 3rd, this will be levied on a total of 60 days, which represents an expansion compared to 2025, when the regulation applied on 54 days. However, the exact amount of the entry fee for 2026 is not yet known.
In 2025 the fee was 10 euros per person, with children under 14 exempt from paying. This regulation applied on weekends and public holidays between mid-April and the end of July, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Day tourists were the main victims; Overnight guests did not have to buy a ticket. Entrance fees were paid online before arrival and a QR code had to be presented on site. Venice recorded over 720,000 paying visitors in 2025, bringing around 5.4 million euros into the city's coffers. In comparison, the revenue from 2024 was 2.4 million euros from 485,000 visitors, which illustrates the positive development of visitor numbers and revenue.
Regulations and measures
The new entry policy was introduced to control mass tourism in Venice and improve the quality of life of locals. In 2025 alone, over 2,500 fines were imposed, mainly due to missing tickets. City Councilor for Finance Michele Zuin expressed positive opinions about the system and reported greater planning security for visitors to the city. The income should not only benefit the city, but also the residents, for example through stable garbage fees.
In addition to the ticket regulations, there have been new requirements for travel groups since August 1, 2024. Groups of more than 25 people are no longer allowed to be accompanied by tour guides, and the use of loudspeakers is prohibited in the city center and on the islands of Burano, Murano and Torcello. Penalties for violations can range from 25 to 500 euros.
Residents and tourism
Venice has an estimated 15 million guests per year, making the city one of the most visited in the world. There are fewer than 50,000 people living in the city center and there are over 50,000 guest beds available. Critics of the first measures criticize the numerous exceptions, especially for locals and overnight guests, as well as the lack of an upper limit for the number of visitors.
How exactly the entry system will develop in 2026 remains unclear for the time being. A comprehensive evaluation of the collected data is still pending, which is of great importance for both the city and the population. Venice and its people will remain the focus as discussions continue on the best strategy to regulate tourism in this unique city.
