Kahlpahlim Rock Hike (Lambs Head) Cairn's hiking guide

Kahlpahlim Rock Hike (Lambs Head) Cairn's hiking guide

The Kahlpahlim Rock Hike, also known as Lamb’s Head, is a hiking trail near the city of Mareba, Queensland. This is a pleasant hike that can be undertaken all year round and leads both through dense pine forest and through dense tropical rainforest.

At the summit, hikers can enjoy a wide view of Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands. If you want to do a solid half -day hike to one of the best prospects near Cairns, you should definitely try it out.

Kahlpahlim Rock location

The Kahlpahlim Rock Hike is located in Dinden / Davies Creek National Park, near the city of Mareba, about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Cairns. Although it looks much closer to Cairns on the map, you have to drive around the national parks and towards the Tablelands to get access to the starting point.

How do I get here

I do not know any guided tours or companies that organize excursions to Kahlpahlim rock hike. This means that it is best to go to the starting point of the hiking trail to get here.

As already mentioned, it takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Cairns to reach the starting point of the hiking trail. First drive up the winding Kennedy Highway, past Barron Falls and Kuranda. Go on the same highway from Kuranda for another 25 minutes until you reach the Davies Creek Road on the left.

This street leads to the Davies Creek Falls, which are a worthwhile stopover to cool off after the hike. Go past the waterfall and the several designated campsites (behind 6th place) until you see a small parking space with a worn sign that shows the beginning of the Ridge Track. I marked the exact location of this parking lot on the map below.

You can either leave your car here and how to start on the Ridge Track or drive down the Davies Creek Road for another 5 minutes until you reach the small parking lot for the Kahlpahlim Rock hiking trail.

Kahlpahlim rock hiking trail

In addition to the MT Bartle Frere hike, the Kahlpahlim Rock Hike is my favorite route near Cairns. You will experience changing terrain as well as one of the greatest prospects on Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands that you can find.

The route is well marked by orange arrows and ligaments on the trees. Since it is a little offside, you will probably also have the whole route for yourself.

Circuit removal: 18 km back. This took a little more than 4 hours at a moderate pace.

height difference of the hike: 860 m difference in altitude (1280 m amls on the Grat summit)

difficulty of the hike: This route is generally classified as difficult. However, if you have a decent fitness, you will have no problems mastering the hike to Kahlpahlim Rock. It is no more difficult than the pyramid hike from Walsh.

Kahlpahlim Rock Trail

The Kahlpahlim Rock Trail is a longer, broader foothills of the ridge, which begins at the very end of the Davies Creek Road. The path begins through tropical flora and climbs steeply on an old lumbering path specified with pine over a rocky lead and ends with an ascent through dense, wet tropical rainforest.

Both paths meet on a plateau rock section that showed signs of back fire or fire when I ended the hike. From here it is a wet, steep climb to the foot of the huge Kahlpahlim rock. From here the path leads down the rock wall, down the wet slopes and finally steeply up to the ridge in Doglegs.

As soon as you have reached the comb, you can go to the right to reach the rock, or to the left to the research station.

The Gratweg

The Ridge Trail also begins on a flat slope, which quickly becomes steeper as soon as you reach a section with a dense pine forest. After a steep and quick climb you can reach the rock ahead, where the two paths combine.

It is said that the Ridge Trail is steeper than the Kahlpahlim Rock Trail, which is why some recommend that you start with the latter and get off on the Ridge Trail.

I found, however, that the Ridge Trail was a comfortable climb. If you have little time and want it to crack, you can also get up and down on the ridge path because the total route is shorter.

The loop

The Kahlpahlim rock hike can best be completed in a round loop. Both trails lead to Kahlpahlim Rock so that you can choose which track you want to start.

I decided to make the climb on the steeper Ridge Trail and get down on the wider Kahlpahlim Rock Track. Note that the parking spaces for these hiking trails are located at different locations along the Davies Creek Road. So if you go the circular route, you have to go one last 20-minute street section.

Kahlpahlim Rock (Lambs Head) summit and view

above on the Kahlpahlim rock hike you have the best view of Cairns and the adjacent rainforest when you climb the rocky clearing right when you reach the comb.

You can also go to the left here and follow the orange markings for a clearing with a large research station. If you continue to follow the path markings in the adjacent bush, you will also be led to a steep grass -covered clearing with a great view of the Atherton Tablelands.

Below you will find some recordings that I made of the ridge and with my drone.
