Hike to Whitsunday Peak on the Whitsunday Islands, Queensland
The Whitsunday Peak Hike is a short day hike that leads to the highest point on Whitsunday Island. At the top, hikers are rewarded with a wide view over the entire Whitsunday Islands.
Whitsunday Island Yacht or boat access
To get to the Whitsunday Peak Hike, access to a boat is required. If you are lucky enough to find yourself on your own yacht or your own boat, then you are lucky.
If not, Charter Yachts Australia is a very popular charter company that also rented out yachts and boats for those who are looking for their own adventure on Whitsunday Islands.
Arrival to the Trail Head
To get to the Whitsunday Peak Hike, access to a boat is required. For those who do cruises or sailing in the Whitsundays, drive to Cid Harbor, a popular anchorage on the west side of Whitsunday Island.
There are many decent anchor places in Cid Harbor, and the beach is only a short piece away from the anchor bay. You will find the hiking location marked on the map below.
Beware of sharks in Cid Harbor
For those who sail or drive to Cid Harbor, you will notice yellow buoys in the water and signs on land that warn against swimming in Cid Harbor. Unfortunately there have been numerous shark attacks in this bay in recent years.

Hike to the Whitsunday Peak
When arriving on the beach, you will notice a sign that indicates the beginning of the Whitsunday Peak hike.
The hike begins directly on the beach and winds up the mountain steeply, through dense bushes and over several streams.

The route is about 5 km for the return trip. The Whitsunday Peak reaches a height of 425 m and is the highest point on Whitsunday Island.
The signage indicates that hikers should plan for at least four hours for the way back. If you are relatively fit, it will probably take about 1.5 hours for ascent and 1 hour for descent. But you will probably want to plan some time for the summit, the view is incredible.
You may notice that the higher you climb the mountain, from shorter shrubs to an almost rainforest -like scene.
The view
When you reach the summit of the Whitsunday Peak hike, you will be greeted with a panoramic view of the entire Whitsunday Islands.
Note Hook Island in the north, the Molle Island Group in the west and even Hamilton Island and the Southern Whitsunts on the other side.

a quick tip
When you have arrived at the top, you can go a little further through a short bush strip to achieve another viewpoint on the other. It is not clearly marked and you have to search for a thin path that leads there.
Best time to travel for the Whitsundays
The best month for a visit is September. This is due to higher water temperatures, warm days and the slightest amount of precipitation.
However,it is possible to visit the Whitsundays all year round. The high season for sailing and cruise on the Whitsunday Islands is between May and September.
During the summer there is definitely hotter weather, there is more tropical rain and the risk of hurricanes. Summer is also the high season for dangerous sea sting in the waters of the coral sea.
