Blue Grotto Montenegro (Kotor) - ultimate guide
A complete and current guide to visit the blue grotto in Montenegro (Bay of Kotor).
The blue grotto, also called Blue Grotto or Plava Spilja in Montenegrin, is an amazing sea cavity that is one of the most popular attractions on the Montenegro coast.
famous for their seductive blue lights and crystal -clear water, should visit this remarkable sea cave on every list of activities in Kotor or Budva.
In this travel guide, I will describe everything you need to know about visiting the blue grotto in Montenegro, including the arrival of what awaits you and some photos of my trip!
About Montenegros Blue Grotto
During each of Croatia's Blue Grotto, near the island of Vis, the blue grotto in Montenegro does not close attention. At least not as much as it deserves!
This is a blessing for adventure travelers, since they often have these amazing sea caves all by themselves and they do not have to share with a dozen other excursion boats!
Similar to the Croatian blue grotto, the blue grotto from Montenegro has its name from the beautiful blue shimmer. This is generated by the sun, which is reflected by the crystal -clear water and illuminates the interior of the cave. This natural phenomenon is spectacular to look at and even more amazing to swim in it!
In addition, the cave input is quite small and can only be reached with small boats. It is also a good idea to take the tide because it is almost impossible to get into (or escape) with flood.
Where is the blue grotto in Montenegro?
The blue grotto is located on the Lustica peninsula near the popular tourist regions Kotor, Tivat, Budva and Herceg Novi.
The cave entrance is located south of the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. It is quite inconspicuous and almost impossible from the outside if you don't know where to search.
In addition, there is no access to this cave from the country. This is due to the steep cliffs on this part of the Montenegrin coast.
To get to the grotto, you must therefore enter the sea.
How to get from Kotor to the blue grotto
There are two main options to get to the blue grotto from popular tourist destinations such as the Kotor Bay (Boka Bay), Tivat or Budva.
Option 1: Book tour through Kotor
This is by far the cheapest option to get from Kotor to the blue cave, and the option I chose.
The boat tour contains all the highlights of the bay of Kotor and the surrounding coast, including a visit to the submarine tunnel, the Lady of the Rocks (artificial island with a church), Mamula and the Blue Cave.
This trip takes a little more than 3 hours and therefore offers an excellent price-performance ratio. And with comfortable meeting points it is easy to join when you drop by on a cruise ship for a day (also cheaper than the cruise excursions).
Travel tip: I always book with Getyourguide (above) in bad weather you get the full amount.

Option 2: Boot taxi from the beach of Igalo
This second option is ideal for price -conscious travelers who want to save some money. However, it requires some public transport (or your own vehicle) and you will miss other highlights of the above tour.
First you should make your way to the Igalo beach, which is located at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor near the Croatian border. Many local boat trips start every day from this beach.
These excursions only cost 5 euros and also stop on the beautiful beach of Janica and on several other smaller sea caves.

What you can expect in the blue grotto (blue grotto)
Are you interested in other photos and want to know how it is to visit the blue grotto in Montenegro? Here is an overview of my recent experiences with the Kotor boat tour linked above.
enter the grotto
At first glance, the entrance to this beautiful cave does not look much more than a narrow hole in the rock wall. When we approached the speedboat, we noticed that the flood was already quite high and were a little worried about whether we could squeeze or not.
Fortunately, our boat driver worked on the Adriatic all his life and knew exactly how to get.
It took a few seconds for our eyes to get used to it. But after a few moments we were enveloped by a sparkling natural dome made of water blue. The blue light radiates from the sandy bottom of the deep saltwater cavity and illuminates the entire cave in a spectacular way!

swimming in the grotto
When you visit the blue grotto, you just have to swim in! Only smaller ships can drive in, which means that it is safe!
The water is crystal clear and quite deep, which means that you can swim and explore the blue water cavity on your own.
The back entrance
After a short tour, our driver wanted to show us the back entrance of the cave. This section was somewhat more difficult to maneuver, as strong currents inserted and pulled out. However, when we got out, we were shown a number of caves around the corner.
Everyone was spectacular, with amazing turquoise water and steep, green cliffs. However, since it is much smaller than the blue cave, we couldn't enter it with our boat.
Travel tip: Spend the night in Kotor
The best accommodation in Kotor are the old town, Muo (west side of the bay) or Dobrota (east side of the bay). Below is a brief summary of the top rated tips and recommendations for every budget.
- Blue Premium Spa Resort-a fantastic luxury spa resort only for adults with a view of Boca Kotorska.
- Apartmani Art Karampana - a nice apartment in the old town. Rated with 9.7 out of 10 with hundreds of reviews.
- Centrum Hostel - With hundreds of reviews, this is still the best rated hostel for location and atmosphere in the old town of Kotor.
