Bad Liebenstein inspires: travel into the world of garden culture!

Bad Liebenstein has recently attracted interest from tour operators from all over Germany. They visited the city as part of a three-day specialist trip organized by Thüringer Tourismus GmbH. The focus of the event was “Garden Culture” and offered participants the opportunity to explore the region’s horticultural beauties. Delegations from Bavaria, Upper Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate were represented, among others. The highlights of this trip included central stops such as the cities of Erfurt, Weimar, Gotha, Meiningen and of course Bad Liebenstein itself.

The Altenstein Castle Park received very special attention, offering a historical tour as a highlight of the trip. This landscape park impresses with its unique combination of garden art design and spectacular rock formations. The park was created around 1800 by Duke George I of Saxe-Meiningen as part of his summer residence and offers romantic landscape scenes, including the striking Devil's Bridge, the Sennhütte as well as the Chinese Little House and the Chinese Rotunda.

The garden artistic diversity in the castle park

Over the years, well-known garden artists such as Hermann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau, Carl Eduard Petzold and Peter Joseph Lenné have contributed to the design of the park. These artists introduced targeted plantings and sightlines to enrich the overall appearance of the park. The final design was completed in 1866 under Duke George II, which gave the park an additional architectural flair. Particularly noteworthy is the large carpet bed in the park, which is planted annually based on historical models.

Altenstein Castle Park is open all day and entry is free, making it an attractive destination for garden lovers and tourists. However, the castle itself remains closed until further notice and can only be visited on weekends as part of guided tours. Guided tours of the park are currently not taking place, but visitors can still enjoy the park.

The address of the park is: Altenstein Castle and Park Administration, Altenstein Castle, 36448 Bad Liebenstein. The combination of historical heritage and garden artistic achievements makes the castle park an important cultural and recreational location that will certainly attract many more visitors.

Like the reporting from insuedthueringen.de shows, the topic of garden culture in Bad Liebenstein is not only a magnet for visitors, but also an important part of the region's cultural heritage. This was impressively demonstrated during the tour operators' recent visits.
