On Tuesday, September 2nd, 2025, RTL will publish the latest case in the popular crime comedy series “Miss Merkel – A Cruise Crime”. The third film is entitled “Murder on the High Seas” and promises an exciting plot, this time taking place in the middle of the Atlantic. Katharina Thalbach once again stars as the detective ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The story is based on the third “Miss Merkel” novel by David Safier, which is becoming increasingly popular in the German crime fiction literature scene. In this film, Angela Merkel takes part in a crime cruise, which is led by the charismatic best-selling author Florian Watzek, played by Stephan Luca. Watzek stages his own death on stage, but the act turns into a real crime when the device is tampered with and he is actually murdered.
The characters and their conflicts
Merkel, accompanied by her husband Joachim Sauer (Thorsten Merten) and her bodyguard Mike (Tim Kalkhof), board the ship and immerse themselves in the world of German crime fiction. Watzek is arrogant and treats his assistant (Mai Duong Kieu) badly, who is heavily involved in his latest work. This assistant soon becomes a murder suspect because the manipulated device was in her care.
Tensions rise as another death occurs and two confessions are made. But Merkel is certain that the truth is more complex than it initially seems. Another interesting factor is the planned invitation from Commissioner Hannemann, which Merkel does not like, and the further conflicts that arise from this.
Cinematic implementation and criticism
The production of “Murder on the High Seas” is described as the best of the series. In comparison, the first film, Murder in the Castle (2023), was criticized as over-the-top and silly, while the second film, Murder in the Cemetery (2024), had a better balance between comedy and crime. In the current part, however, there is no focus on parody; the characters are serious and not designed as comedy figures.
As far as the image composition is concerned, the lighting, especially the night shots of the ship, is praised. There are also comical scenes and slapstick moments that lighten the mood and give the film a special charm. Watzek's competition is represented by prominent authors such as Lara Mandoki and Dirk Borchardt, who also take part in the event. Additional small roles are taken on by Saskia Wolf as captain and Karo Wille as hostess.
Viewers can look forward to an exciting mix of crime and comedy, which continues to enrich the series about Miss Merkel and sets a new high point with “Murder on the High Seas”.
