Summer vacation 2025: Course to travel despite the need for savings and increasing costs!

Österreich - Current surveys show that 96 percent of Austrians want to travel at least once this year. It is particularly noteworthy that 70 percent are planning a trip abroad, while about 50 percent want to spend their vacation within Austria. This data comes from a survey that was carried out in April 2023 among 1000 people and illustrate how strong the desire to travel is despite increasing costs. At the time of the survey, 40 percent of the respondents had already booked their summer vacation. Only 4 percent are undecided or do not plan a vacation.

In comparison, the actual travel activity was already very high in the summer of 2024, since 89 percent of those surveyed actually traveled, although 95 percent had vacation plans. The main reasons that speak against a trip are financial aspects, temporal restrictions and health reasons. Statistics show that 60 percent of vacationers have to pay attention to their vacation budget this year, whereby 20 percent even have to save heavily.

savings options and vacation expenses

The savings focus primarily on the expenses on site, the number and duration of the trips. A majority of travelers who have to save takes cheaper accommodations into account and pay attention to the costs incurred when visiting restaurant. The middle holiday budget is 1233 euros for each person, which is 171 euros more than in the previous year due to inflation, but is really less worth it.

  • 56% of travelers have a budget of 1000 euros or less.
  • over 60-year-olds and solo travelers tend to plan higher budgeted holidays.
  • families with children, on the other hand, have an average of around 120 euros less.

With regard to the preferred travel destinations, a majority of 58 percent want to go to the sea, with Italy, Croatia, Greece, Germany and Spain the most popular countries. In addition, 51 percent of those surveyed plan to spend their vacation in the beautiful home country of Austria, with Carinthia, Styria and Lower Austria the most popular destinations.

travel behavior and means of transport

When choosing the means of transport, it turns out that 71 percent of travelers want to drive their own car. 37 percent only use the car, while 21 percent consider a combination of car and aircraft and 13 percent prefer the train. Especially for families, 75 percent travel with private cars, while solo travelers are increasingly falling back on public transport such as bus (27 percent) and train (31 percent).

Another interesting aspect is that almost 60 percent of those surveyed want to spend their summer vacation by the sea. Families and younger travelers under the age of 30 show a special preference for this holiday. Around 25 percent plan to enjoy their summer vacation at the lake or in the mountains, while 31 percent of urban trips are considered. The main motifs for vacation are relaxation, recharge your batteries, enjoy the sun and spend time with family and friends. Less than 10 percent value aspects such as digital detox or getting to know other cultures.

Although the desire to travel is unbroken, many Austrians have to be economical in the inside. The search for cheaper travel options and conscious planning are therefore essential for many to satisfy the longing for vacation and relaxation.
