Looking for a short hike on the Tasman Peninsula? Consider checking out the Waterfall Bay Track. This scenic trail is a great, easy out-and-back trail that passes several famous geological formations, including the Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen.

In this blog post I would like to outline everything you need to know about visiting Waterfall Bay. I will also include some of my photographs which I hope will inspire your visit.

About Waterfall Bay Tasmania

Waterfall Bay is a picturesque coastal bay on the Tasman Peninsula on the east coast of Tasmania. The bay is famous for its weather-dependent waterfall that cascades down the steep cliffs into the sea.

While most of the year is more of a wet patch, the Waterfall Bay Walk is still an excellent walk regardless of the water current. The route offers great views of the unique geological formations and arches, the remains of ancient sea caves.

Directions to Waterfall Bay Track (Tasman Peninsula Track)

The Waterfall Bay trail begins at the large trail car park for Tasman’s Arch, approximately 25 minutes from Port Arthur or 1 hour 15 minutes from Hobart.

To get here you will need your own vehicle as there is no public transport or tours leading to the Waterfall Bay Walk.

However, if you don't have a car, you still have the opportunity to see all of the route's highlights on a 3-hour wilderness cruise. This is one of the top-rated things to do on the Tasman Peninsula and one you definitely shouldn't miss!

The Bay Walk waterfall

Hiking distance: 3.4 km there and back
Duration: 1 hour there and back
Elevation: Mostly flat
Difficulty: Easy

Waterfall Bay forms a section of the Tasman Trail that follows the coast from Tasman Arch to Fortescue Bay. However, to reach the Waterfall Bay viewpoint, hikers only need to walk 1.7 kilometers from the parking lot before turning back.

The route is wide, easy to follow and mostly flat for the duration. There are many places to explore along the route to admire the incredible coastal views and the unique geological phenomena that make the Tasmanian coast so famous.

Below is a summary of the Waterfall Bay hike with some of the highlights you might expect along the way.

Tasmanian Arch

After parking your car in the large, designated parking area, you'll immediately notice the fenced-in viewpoint for Tasman Arch.

This curved natural bridge is the result of a collapsed sea cave reduced to rubble by years of surf. We visited this beautiful spot early in the morning which meant we got a lovely ray of sunshine through the arch.

Devil's kitchen

The trail to Waterfall Bay begins as you head to the right (south) of Tasman Arch. Just a few dozen meters from Tasman Arch is another geological highlight. This time it's the Devils Kitchen, which is also the remains of a collapsed sea cave.

From Devils Kitchen, follow the signposted path that leads to the Waterfall Bay viewpoint.

Paterson's Arch

After just a kilometer hike through a dry eucalyptus forest, you reach another viewing point for a collapsed sea cave. This one is called Patersons Arch and while it's not as famous as the others, it's still a nice viewpoint.

Additionally, if you look down, you will notice that the rocky base is very similar to the nearby Tessellated Pavement.

Viewpoint in Waterfall Bay

Hikers who continue from Paterson's lookout reach the main event of this short, scenic coastal hike. Waterfall Bay Viewpoint is a beautiful coastal bay. The rolling green hills suddenly give way to steep rocky cliffs that plunge into the deep blue ocean.

If you look directly at the cliff opposite, you will see the Waterfall Bay waterfall. This is a unique waterfall as it plunges directly into the ocean. Unfortunately the current is very dependent on rain. So if you visit when conditions are good, you'll probably only see a wet patch on the cliff.

There are also some information boards at the lookout describing the history, geology and unique underwater biology of the area.
