Where is Anse Cocos?

Anse Cocos is located on the eastern side of La Digue Island in the Seychelles.

You can find it north of Grand Anse Beach. However, there is no road to get here, so you will have to choose one of the options listed below.

How to get to Anse Cocos on La Digue

What's unique about this remote tropical bay is that you can't ride a bike or take a taxi here. Instead, you have two options, both of which involve scenic jungle hikes. Both are included in my guide to the 6 best hikes on La Digue.

Don't miss the most beautiful beach of La Digue: Anse Marron (more secluded)

Option 1: Short trail from Grand Anse

The first option is the easiest and instructions are not required. What you want to do is drive to Grand Anse Beach, accessible via a paved inland road. The best way to get around is to simply rent a bike for 100 SCR per day, plug in the Google Maps pin and enjoy the ride.

Once you arrive in Grand Anse, you should take the short jungle path just behind the beach heading north. Almost immediately you pass a beautiful shallow lagoon with unique granite rocks. Follow this path over the headland and down to Petite Anse.

From Petite Anse the path further towards Anse Cocos is very obvious. It quickly deviates from the sandy beaches and winds through a picturesque, flat jungle area. It may seem like you're heading towards the mountains, but don't worry. Soon the path cuts to the right and climbs another small headland before descending to the southern end of the beautiful Anse Cocos.

There are sections at the end that look like they lead to the water. However, if there is still a path that leads to the left and follows into the jungle, continue on that until it leads down to the sand.

Option 2: Jungle Trails + Romeo & Juliet Viewpoint

If you're up for a longer, more epic adventure with the best vantage point on the island, consider this route.

There is an unnamed path leading from the mountainous road to the Belle Vue restaurant (path to Nid d'Aigle) that cuts through the eastern side of inland La Digue and ends at Anse Cocos. On the way you stop at a viewpoint with a controversial name. Many call it the Romeo and Juliet viewpoint on La Digue, but apparently the name is controversial.

I walked this trail with my guide named Henry, so I won't give up on his secret path (he calls the viewpoint his secret "unique viewpoint"). However, I would strongly recommend calling him if you want to go this route. Henry has lived on the island his entire life and is very knowledgeable about everything from the history of Seychelles to endemic animal and plant species. If you don't get a guide, you can easily get lost as there are many unmarked, distracting trails used by loggers in this part of the jungle.

What to expect when you arrive

While some of the popular beaches like Anse Source D’Argent are undeniably stunning, sometimes you just want to get away from the crowds. Of course, secluded nature at its finest is what you'll be rewarded with if you make the effort to get out to Anse Cocos.

This beach is a long stretch of white sand surrounded by a fairly well-protected bay. At the southern end of the beach you will find a small beach bar called “Coco Bar”. The people who work here are great and cut me some delicious tropical fruit after the long hike.

The beach is generally great for swimming. It's fairly flat near the shore, but quickly drops off into deep blue. You must be a confident swimmer as strong tides and waves can occur.

Anse Cocos Natural Swimming Pool (Pointe Anse Cocos)

One of the highlights that really makes Anse Cocos one of the best beaches on La Digue is the natural swimming pool. If you continue north along the beach you'll quickly see what I'm talking about.

This is by far one of the best swimming spots on the island. Large granite boulders converge on the headland to form a naturally sheltered pool. The water color here has to be seen to be believed. If the tide or waves on the beach are too rough, then the natural swimming pool of Anse Cocos is for you.

Where to stay on La Digue

La Digue is a fairly small island and you can get anywhere within 20-30 minutes by bike. You'll find many hotels on the west side of the island near the jetty, but only a few along the narrow coastal road on the mostly inhabited east side.

La Digue has a wide range of hotel and resort offerings, ranging from relatively 'budget-friendly' self-catering lodges to incredible luxury resorts.

Below you will find a short summary of the best tips.

Amazing Chateau: Hotel Chateau St Cloud (Mid-Range) I stayed at Chateau St Cloud on La Digue and I can personally recommend it as one of the best accommodation options on the island. This three-star hotel is perfect as a mid-range option as the location is excellent - just a little outside the main district on a quiet street that is close enough to both the incredible southwest beaches and the harbor. The staff are all very accommodating and the breakfast buffet is great. The rooms are very spacious and the hotel even has a pool and bar.

Waterfront Hotel: Le Nautique (High-End) Rated one of the best waterfront accommodations on La Digue, Le Nautique is a luxury offering that combines traditional Creole architecture with modern comforts like king-size beds and rainfall showers. Here you will also discover a fantastic outdoor restaurant and a beautiful garden setting.

Self Catering: Dream Holiday (Budget) Dream Holiday Self Catering is located at the northern end of the island, very close to the ferry terminal. This location is great as you are close to bike rentals, snack shops and even supermarkets on La Digue's main street. Dream Holiday offers queen rooms with air conditioning, TV, private bathroom and even a balcony. This is a great option if you're visiting La Digue on a budget, while comfort and location are still a priority for you.
